Acne & Scars Skin, Hair & Nails

Hello doctors, I'm a 19 yo female who has suffered acne through teenage years. After my acne cleared, all these pigmentation marks were left on my face. Some were red, and some were brown. They don't seem to fade, even though I'm using topical retinoid. Hence, I'm thinking of going for lasers, but I am not sure what kind of lasers to go for. A rough estimation of costs would be appreciated!

DOCTOR’S ANSWER (1)

Dear Roxanne

Sorry to hear you are troubled by post acne red and brown marks. These are very common in acne patients and of course a source of concern. It is most important to first ensure active acne is no longer an issue, as each new acne spot can potentially leave a new mark on your skin.

From my experience I will usually target the red marks with a VBEAM laser, which is excellent at shutting down the dilated vessels causing the red marks In addition, I will suggest a non-ablative laser such as Excel V or Genesis laser to even out the brown marks. Good improvement can usually be seen after 2-3 monthly sessions. Do visit a doctor or dermatologist with experience in treating acne scars to help you further.

Warm regards

Dr Stephanie Ho, Dermatologist
