Stomach discomfort after meal is a common complaint especially among people who consume larger portions of food in a relatively short time. Management for such discomfort may just be taking smaller portions each meal at a slower pace. At times, poor digestion due to upset intestinal rhythm, small bowel bacteria overgrowth or chronic constipation may also produce similar symptoms.

Do watch for "red flag" signs of pain happening mostly at night, black stools, weight loss or pain which radiates to the sides or the back. These signs and symptoms may indicate involvement of other organs such as the gallbladder or the pancreas.

If your symptoms persist despite ensuring regular small meals and after relieving any constipation, you should consult with your doctor to see if he or she can help to prescribe some medicine to relief the discomfort. Some people may need further investigations including scans eventually.

As Dr Lim has pointed out in his reply, while it appears likely that the origin of your symptoms is probably of gastric origin, there are many other causes of abdomen pain, such as due to the gall bladder or pancreas as outlined. However the most serious cause of the symptoms could be if the origin is from the heart. This usually manifests as chest pain or discomfort that is brought on classically by exertion i. e walking.

Could persistent burping and belching pose a serious health risk?

Belching or burping is a normal body response to get rid of excessive gaseous material in the upper digestive tract. This works somewhat similar to the pressure-relief-valve found on pressure cookers to let go of excessive pressure build-up. In general, belching helps to reduce discomfort from gaseous distension. However, if this happens too frequently, it can result in disturbing symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, painful or difficult swallowing, complications from acid burns might have developed in your oesophagus.
