Why have I had my period 3 times this month?

Doctor's Answer

Most women have monthly periods so to have your period 3 times per month is rather usual and will require further investigation. Possible causes could be hormonal imbalance / disturbances, cervical problems (polyps, infection) or uterine abnormalities (fibroids, polyps, hyperplasia) for example. Depending on your age, cervical and uterine precancer or cancer would have to be excluded via a pap smear or hysteroscopy D+C (dilatation and curettage) respectively. An ultrasound of your pelvis would be helpful in determining possible causes too. Sometimes, there may be no cause found. Depending on the reason for your abnormal period, your gynaecologist can then recommend an appropriate treatment for you (eg. hormonal medication).
