Will plates and screws be removed after jaw surgery? (photo)

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for your question.

Plates and screws from jaw surgery are left in the jaw after surgery to allow for stabilization of the jaw. This is the most important during the first six month post-surgery to allow for complete bone healing.

These plates and screws typically do not require removal after bone healing unless there is infection of the plates or the patient requests for them to be removed.

Removal of these plates will require another surgery. Do discuss with your oral surgeon and orthodontist about your concerns.

Warmest regards,

Dr Enrica Sham
