Hi Zhen Yi,

Thanks for the D2D. If, despite regular unprotected intercourse, pregnancy does not occur after six months to a year, then the couple may be facing fertility problem.

It is an increasingly common problem in modern societies, affecting 10-15% Singaporean couples. If you are unable to conceive after 6 months to a year of trying, it is better to seek medical evaluation and help.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles, we understand the body as an organic whole where the internal body is in tune with one’s social and external environment. We treat holistically, taking into account your physical, emotional and spiritual aspect.

Maintaining balance between yin and yang, qi and blood is essential to good physical and mental health. A TCM diagnosis focuses on finding the body’s imbalance and seeks to bring it back to balance. By doing so, all systems will work more efficiently, including your reproductive organs.

A couple is encouraged to consult the TCM physician together. In a typical TCM consultation, I will be asking you a series of questions pertaining to your fertility and menstrual period. Other questions include diet, lifestyle, sleeping pattern, stress level, bowel movement, past/current illness, family history and emotions.

Combining with TCM unique diagnostic methods, which involve observation, smelling and pulse taking, I will be able to properly diagnose your condition and advise you on the course of treatment to boost fertility.

Thanks for the D2D. From a TCM perspective, the kidneys, spleen and liver are the most important organs in maintaining fertility. The kidneys play a key role in successful conception and reproduction. The spleen is in charge of producing qi and blood while the liver is responsible for maintaining its smooth flow within the body.

Kidney and spleen deficiency can result in reduced nourishment to the reproductive organs, which may in turn hinder conception. Weak body constitution, poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle are the common causes for deficient kidney and spleen syndrome.

Liver qi stagnation is another common reason for infertility. A fast pace life, demanding jobs and lack of work-life balance is undoubtedly causing mental and physical stress on the body, impacting fertility. Stress affects liver qi, hindering smooth circulation of qi and blood to the entire body, including the reproductive organs.

In the women, it can affect her ovulation and implantation. She may also produce poor quality eggs. In the man, it affects his sperm count and quality. His sexual performance may also decline.

Thanks for the D2D. Herbal medication and acupuncture are the two methods commonly used to treat infertility problem.

TCM Herbal prescription is customised according to individual’s body constitution. It consists of several herbs combined together to nourish and balance the body, especially the kidneys, spleen and liver which regulate the reproductive organs.

Acupuncture treatment which involves inserting needles at the acupoints along the meridians, regulates the flow of qi and blood and balance yin and yang in the body. It serves to tonify where there is deficiency, drain where there is excess, and promote free flow where there is stagnation.

Physician will monitor your progress, and modify the treatment according to how your body responds to the prescription or acupuncture. Dietary and lifestyle related advice will also be given to complement the course of treatment.

TCM treats holistically. Treatment does not only focus on a particular fertility-related problem, it also improves all systems of your body and mind.

If you sleep well, have good appetite and digestion, feel energetic and have a healthy sense of self, then all systems will work efficiently, including your reproductive system.

Thanks for the D2D. For patients undergoing acupuncture, some may experience slight bruising or bleeding after acupuncture.

If this occurs, apply small pressure to the affected sites and the slight bleeding should cease soon after, bruising and soreness will usually disappear after a few days.

In rare cases, patients may feel dizzy, weak and nausea during their first treatment. This is normally due to anxiety, poor health or hunger. Should there be any discomfort or concerns during an acupuncture session, inform the physician right away so adjustments to the treatment can be made accordingly. It is also advisable to eat an hour before the treatment to help prevent this.

All needles used in our clinics are sterile packed single use needles which are disposed of as biohazardous wastes in accordance with National Environment Agency (NEA) regulations.

TCM herbal prescription consists of several herbs combined to enhance the herbs’ effectiveness and minimizes any possible side effects. Some nourishing herbal medication has the effect of increasing Yang, which may result in slight “heatiness”.

Symptoms include feeling hot, thirsty or difficulty in passing bowels. If necessary, physician may adjust the prescription during subsequent consultation to minimise any discomfort.

Our herbal powder is approved by Health Sciences Authority (HSA). To prevent any drug-herb interaction, observe a 2-hour interval between consumption of herbal medication and western medication.

Thanks for the D2D. Yes, you're able to combine TCM therapeutic treatments and western medicine to treat my infertility problem.

Many of my patients seek help from both Chinese and Western medicine to treat infertility. It is common for patients to take Chinese and western medicine concurrently. Many receive TCM treatments while undergoing IVF or IUI procedure.

TCM and western medicine can work hand in hand to increase the chance of patient getting pregnant. Studies have also shown that acupuncture improves pregnancy rates in women undergoing IVF.

But make sure to communicate with the doctors to let them know the medication and treatment that you are taking. And also, observe a 2-hour interval between consumption of herbal medication and western medication, so as to prevent any drug-herb interaction.

Acupuncture treatment which involves inserting needles at specific acupoints along the meridians, regulates the flow of qi and blood and restore healthy balance of yin and Yang. It serves to tonify where there is deficiency, drain where there is excess, and promote free flow where there is stagnation.

Acupuncture can help to normalize hormones, regulate ovulation, and facilitate implantation by increasing blood flow to the uterus. Studies have also shown that acupuncture improves pregnancy rates in women undergoing IVF.

Thanks for the D2D. Age is a huge factor in fertility. Clinical practice has observed that treatment is most effective towards adults aged between 21-35.

Fertility decreases as one ages. As a woman ages, it takes longer to conceive and the risk of not being able to get pregnant increases. The risk of miscarriage and complications in pregnancy and childbirth also increase. A man's fertility and sexual performance also decline progressively as he ages.

TCM believes that kidney qi declines as one ages. As kidney plays a key role in facilitating reproduction, it is easier to conceive and give birth when kidney qi is at its optimal level. This happens between the age of 21-28.

Thereafter, kidney qi decreases gradually and a woman’s chances of getting pregnant declines. From age 35, kidney qi decreases more significantly, fertility decline speeds up. By age 40, fertility has decreased significantly and risk of pregnancy and birth complications increase.

TCM treatment can increase kidney qi to boost fertility but age is a limiting factor that affects success rates.

If you have been trying to conceive for six months to a year without success, seek medical evaluation and help as soon as possible, before kidney qi declines significantly.

Hi Fei Fei,

Thanks for the D2D. The cost depends on the treatment plan that may vary with individual. Treatment involves herbal medication, acupuncture or both. Duration and intensity of treatment also differs from person to person.

Usually, we are looking at a time frame of 3 to 6 months to improve one’s body constitution and to prepare the body for pregnancy. Depending on individual’s condition, some takes a shorter time to conceive while others require a longer period of time.

Thanks for the D2D. TCM embraces lifestyle change. A diet that is in sync with the treatment will definitely increase its efficacy.

Most of you have probably heard about “cold uterus”. it is a result of deficient Yang energy in the body. Yang is the warming energy that supports ovulation and implantation, thus facilitating reproduction. If uterus is cold and yang is weak, quality of eggs may be poor, ovulation and implantation may also be affected.

“Cold” symptoms may include feeling cold easily, cold limbs, cold abdomen, weak digestion, low back ache, irregular menstruation and menstrual cramps that feel better with heat.

Women with “cold uterus” should avoid or minimise cold and raw food, especially first thing in the morning, before and during menstruation. Reduce taking “cooling” drinks, such as bubble tea, green tea and liang teh. Instead, opt for tea with warming spices. Ginger, cinnamon and spices in Chai tea are good for supporting yang energy and warming the uterus.

Physician will provide dietary and lifestyle advice according to individual's body constitution. Adhering to the advice will help to boost fertility.
