Alexandra Hospital Profile Image

Alexandra Hospital

Alexandra Hospital has been operated under the National University Health System (NUHS) since June 2018. As part of the NUHS, the hospital has 176 integrated beds, meaning that both sub-acute and rehabilitative care can be provided to a patient in the same bed, whenever possible. It will complement other NUHS provided by the various hospitals, polyclinics, and specialist centres in the western region.

Bio

Alexandra Hospital is the first integrated hospital in Singapore, providing just one continuum of care for different settings, from acute, sub-acute, to rehabilitative care.

Our clinical model is team-led and programme-based. This means that every patient who comes to Alexandra Hospital will be placed under at least one of our five core clinical programmes, and be taken care of by a single doctor and the same care team, under the programme they are assigned to.

This arrangement reduces the need for a patient to transfer to another healthcare institution, and care can be given in a more dedicated, personalized way, conveniently from one touch point.

Our five clinical programmes span from preventive care (Be Better), acute care (Get Better), chronic condition management (Live Better), healthy ageing (Age Better), and palliative care (Cope Better) [ready in 2019].

Through CareHub@AH, the hospital's Care Managers can be contacted by patients, families, and community partners, so that clinical and social help can be planned for and provided to those who need it.

The aim is to provide an experience for patients that is seamless and holistic, where NUHS' network of member institutions, general practitioners, polyclinics, as well as voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) and social care partners come together, helping patients to get better, and empowering them to stay healthy at home and in the community.

Alexandra Hospital will also be where new patient-centered solutions will be piloted, to let best practices take shape, be shared, and passed on to other institutions, when applicable. Enabled by technology, we want to achieve seamless integrated care for patients with chronic diseases, as well as helping the elderly age healthily, both across the healthcare network and at home.

Good experience at Alexandra Hospital. We rushed there because our roomate had a high fever and the doctor did a quick and accurate diagnosis and we even got the lab test results within an hour. It was a stressful period for us, but we are very grateful for the efficiency of the staff there!

First of all, Alexandra Hospital has not closed down. Their management is now under NUHS thats all. Everyone who i have recently talked to were so surprised that I went there for my treatment. Their 24 hour urgent care centre was so efficient in sorting me out and I was seen to by a doctor in less than half-an-hour!

I was there in the evening for an emergency outpatient for my injured left leg. The place was not crowded with patients. So I get attended to fast. The staffs, nurse, and doctors are friendly and courteous. Was very satisfied with their service compared to other hospitals that I’d visited. And car parking is always available.

I recently found out that Alexandra Hospital has fewer patients than all the other public hospitals because SCDF ambulances don't go there. When I was there, I was seen by a doctor and admitted about 1 hour and I thought that was impressive. The hospital has been renovated and the place still holds its old-school charm. Unless, you are critically ill (then they will transfer you to the major hospitals), I would highly recommend AH!

The experience of getting admitted to Alexandra Hospital is less traumatic and stressful than one would expect. It has less patients for one, so from parking to registering and doing admin work is all so smooth. The wait for the doctors to attend to me, could be reduced if you ask. But overall, a nice environment and good staff.

I was in for three days recently.
Bottom line: Staff is excellent - friendly, helpful, professional=4.5 stars.

Administration: 1.5 stars.
I) It has a bad case of "Hospital Think." There is no excuse in most cases for insisting on the humiliating bare bottom gowns. Bring your own light bathrobe with pockets.  They let me wear mine. The place conspires to keep people from sleeping. In double rooms, the roommate is likely to snore, and leave the TV sound on after they fall asleep. Tests times seem random, certainly more than every 4 hours. Room doors are left open to a bright and noisy hall.

2) The place is grubby. Dusty, dirty, bathroom not cleaned for hours. Signs taped on walls and doors crookedly with tape. It is about the standard of a two-star motel. The place needs a new housekeeping administration.

3) WiFi was iffy and unsecured. TV closed captions would not work. No earphones available for keeping the noise down in a double room.

4) Poor communication among the staff, pharmacy, etc. Be prepared to take notes and remind the staff what is going on - and then waiting for the bureaucracy to try to figure it out.

5) This food service should not be in a hospital. Juice is corn syrup with 15  real juice. Limited whole wheat options. Limited vegetarian or vegan entrees. It is about the standard of a 1965 school cafeteria.

6) It would REALLY be nice to know when the doctors are coming. It is very frustrating to be waiting for hours for a doctor who is way behind.

Alexandra Hospital really needs an administration shake-up that puts the patient first.

I have never been to Alexandra Hospital until recently when a relative was hospitalized and warded there for about a month. During this period, I was there almost everyday and have seen the nurses and medical personnel in action, in the various wards (ICU 2, regular and the physio).

Maybe it is an old hospital or maybe it is not a popular hospital, but Alexandra Hospital has a very high ratio of nurses to patients in each ward.

I have never seen so many medical personnel inside the ICU2 ward.

I spent most time at the regular ward and the nurses were professional, patient and very willing to accommodate requests, if can be done.

The hospital is also mostly air-conditioning free. That caught me by surprise as I am so used to being in air-conditioned hospitals. Here, the corridors retained its old structure, with no windows being built, so fresh air can circulate. Instead there are blind-shutters to keep out the rain. I find that refreshing.

Another plus point is the parking. With less patients, it seemed easier to find a parking space and the parking charges are probably one of the cheapest around for hospitals.

Alexandra Hospital has now recently started a free shuttle bus service, but it comes directly into the housing estates, which is so convenient for all of us living close the to the hospital. It is a efficient hospital and now it just got better.

This hospital is one of the best we have checked-in so far. The service is friendly. The ward has a nice view from the window which helps the patient relax and the restroom design has a nice “happy zen' theme. They have free wifi & charging ports @waiting area, not so crowded too. Plus they have a convenience store inside.

It's far less chaotic and crowded than say, Singapore General Hospital. Beyond that, the healthcare professionals have been demonstrating genuine care and patience with my elderly mum every step of the way.
