Cosmetic Dentistry Profile Image

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry refers to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance.

Types of cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry may involve:

  1. Addition of a dental material to teeth or gums: bonding, porcelain veneers, crowns, gum grafts
  2. Removal of tooth structure or gums: enameloplasty, gingivectomy
  3. Teeth whitening
  4. Straightening of teeth

Popular cosmetic dentistry treatments in Singapore:

  • Teeth whitening. Dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedures for lightening discolored teeth.
  • Tooth reshaping removes parts of the enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth. It may be used to correct a small chip, or to alter the length, shape or position of teeth
  • Veneers are custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. They are an option for closing gaps, enhance the shape, or change the color of teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.
  • Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for missing teeth.
  • Gum life raises and sculpts the gum line. The procedure involves reshaping the tissue and/or underlying bones to create the appearance of longer or more symmetrical teeth.

Effects of Cosmetic Dentistry

Some patients may expect increase in tooth sensitivity after undergoing a cosmetic dentistry procedure. Although many can go back home the same day of the surgery, food restrictions are common to ensure that the surgical procedures do not get affected. Getting dental veneers is also an irreversible procedure as the natural shape of teeth has to be altered in order to fit the veneers in properly. Hence, researching and being committed is necessary before going for the treatment.

It is great that you are thinking about correcting your bite. With skeletal issues such as a slanted jaw, surgery is indeed required in order to achieve a good stable bite. However depending on the degree of skeletal discrepancy (slanted jaw) braces / invisalign are still opti...

Hello Evee, You have described your teeth as "crooked". I take that to mean that you see your teeth as being in the wrong positions i.e. not aligned or "straight". Crooked teeth can be moved to the right position i.e. "straightened". Moving teeth will require braces or clear aligners. You...

Your upper front teeth appear to be straight but the edges are not even. This may give rise to the perception that the teeth are not straight EVEN if the root axes (how the roots appear on xray, and correctly placed braces will tend to make the roots of your teeth parallel) have been properly alig...

Yes, crooked teeth can be indeed be ‘straightened’ with porcelain veneers or crowns. However, there might be a risk of nerve injury. Let's examine the details. When you say crooked teeth, this means that your teeth are not aligned and we'd need to bring them into a w...

I'm sure this protruding look must have been bothering you. Protruding teeth do prop up your lips and give you a full look like what you have shown in your photos. However, we will need to determine if this protruding look is caused by only your teeth being protruding or whether t...
