Cosmetic Dentistry Profile Image

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry refers to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance.

Types of cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry may involve:

  1. Addition of a dental material to teeth or gums: bonding, porcelain veneers, crowns, gum grafts
  2. Removal of tooth structure or gums: enameloplasty, gingivectomy
  3. Teeth whitening
  4. Straightening of teeth

Popular cosmetic dentistry treatments in Singapore:

  • Teeth whitening. Dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedures for lightening discolored teeth.
  • Tooth reshaping removes parts of the enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth. It may be used to correct a small chip, or to alter the length, shape or position of teeth
  • Veneers are custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. They are an option for closing gaps, enhance the shape, or change the color of teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.
  • Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for missing teeth.
  • Gum life raises and sculpts the gum line. The procedure involves reshaping the tissue and/or underlying bones to create the appearance of longer or more symmetrical teeth.

Effects of Cosmetic Dentistry

Some patients may expect increase in tooth sensitivity after undergoing a cosmetic dentistry procedure. Although many can go back home the same day of the surgery, food restrictions are common to ensure that the surgical procedures do not get affected. Getting dental veneers is also an irreversible procedure as the natural shape of teeth has to be altered in order to fit the veneers in properly. Hence, researching and being committed is necessary before going for the treatment.

thanks for the question. Firstly, there are several reasons for the teeth to appear squarish, which prompt people to seek treatment in order to have a set of teeth with nicer dimensions. With the right diagnosis, dentists will be in a better position to advise the chances of rel...

Excessive gum overgrowth (hyperplasia) MAY be due to medication such as anti-hypertensives (especially calcium channel blockers such as amilodipine), anti-depressants, anti-convulsants and immunosuppressants. However, there is usually a component of inflammation in the gums due to...

A tooth that does not bite on another corresponding tooth is described as a non-functional tooth . Non-functional teeth may drift within the jawbone until resistance is encountered to provide an occlusal stop (a stable biting position) because your bite pattern is determined by muscular and ner...

Dear Lunaru, The decision to extract, or not to extract, for any case depends on several factors, such as the facial and lip profile (e.g. are the lips protruding?) the amount of overlap or crowding of the teeth, how much the teeth are flared forward with respect to the bone...

Generally there are a few methods to create space to align teeth. The main ways are: 1. Extraction 2. File the teeth (IPR) 3. Push the teeth forward (buccal expansion) 4. Push the back teeth back (distalization) There are pros and cons of each options. You are right...

I would suggest having a prototype of the veneers made with the ideal shape, size and position of your front teeth so that you and your dentist can visualize the final aesthetic result of combining Invisalign and veneers. At the prototype stage, tweaks to the veneers can be don...

A few of my patients have nightmares of their teeth falling out! It's actually quite distressing when your veneers crack and drop off. First of all, make sure the veneers are well bonded onto the teeth. This is a very technical aspect of the treatment. It needs to be done well. ...

Dear Allyj, Thank you for your question. I don't have a complete photo to make an assessment. However, from what I can see it seems that you do not need jaw reduction to make your face slimmer. I am unable to visualise the rest of your face to make a complete assessment. Botox he...

Crown lengthening is usually required to increase the amount of tooth structure available for a crown to grip on to firmly. This is usually done when the tooth has a short clinical crown (usually 2nd molars) to begin with, has been extensively damaged by decay or fractured due to ...
