Eye & LASIK Profile Image

Eye & LASIK

LASIK is eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness by using a laser to reshape the eye's cornea, while cataract surgery replaces a cloudy lens from your eye with an artificial lens to restore clear vision.

LASIK overview

LASIK is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

The LASIK surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a laser or microkeratome to reshape the eye's cornea in order to improve visual acuity.

For most people, LASIK provides a long-lasting alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Cataract surgery overview

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacification, which is referred to as a cataract.

Many peoples' first symptoms are strong glare from lights and small light sources at night, along with reduced acuity at low light levels.

During cataract surgery, a patient's cloudy natural cataract lens is removed and replaced with a synthetic lens to restore the lens's transparency. Following surgical removal of the natural lens, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant is inserted.

Well over 90% of operations are successful in restoring useful vision, with a low complication rate.

Risks of LASIK

  • Dry eyes - A reduction in tear production is possible for the first few months after the LASIK surgery. Eye drops can be a temporary solution to this

  • Under-correction - It is possible that too little tissue is removed from your eye, causing you to still not have perfect vision. Another procedure will be needed if this is the case.

  • Over-correction - The opposite to the condition above, though this will be slightly more cumbersome to fix.

  • Vision Loss - On the most extreme and rare spectrum, vision loss could occur due to some mishap or may not be able to see as clearly as before.

How long it takes to recover from LASIK surgery

Theoretically, you should be able to see better after 1 day of your surgery. Nevertheless, it is common for your vision to be slightly blurry or unclear for the first few weeks as your eyes are adjusting. A good guideline would be that the higher your inital prescription, the longer it will take to recover from the LASIK surgery.

It seems like you are having some symptoms suggestive of inflammation around the surface of the eye. This could be due to dry eye, blepharitis or allergic conjunctivitis, to name a few possibilities. It would be best to seek the opinion of an ophthalmologist who would be able to c...

As the time to recover from laser vision correction (LASIK or ReLEx SMILE) is faster, I would suggest having laser vision correction first followed by double eyelid surgery. Wait about 2 weeks after laser vision correction before proceeding with the eyelid surgery.

Hi bh The question about whether you are suitable for TransPRK, PRK, LASIK, or any other refractive surgery really depends on the severity of the dryness, and whether, if severe, it can be reversed. This assessment can only be done with a thorough consult and examination in cli...

Hi Aspan When you see your doctor next week, ask him/her exactly what you have asked over here. You already have the right questions to ask:). But if we talk in general terms, yes, it is possible to have overcorrections after SMILE, just as it is possible to have overcorrections or undercorrection...

Hi H Styes/chalazions or lumps in the eyelids due to blocked glands can be drained when they persist despite conservative treatment like hot compresses and antibiotic eyedrops/ointments, and if they are large enough to be bothersome. Large styes may cause not only cosmetic iss...

Embarking on the journey towards laser vision correction can be one fraught with conflicting information and differences of opinion even amongst eye surgeons. The criteria used to consider when a patient is suitable for LASIK are many. As with all forms of risk analysis, often ...

Hi Lum Wen, Thanks for your photo and questions. The photo you sent is a little blurry. It can be difficult to take good macro photos with a phone camera. However it does look like you have some meibomian gland capping. This is not infrequently seen with posterior meibomitis, ...

Eyelid twitching or blepharospasm is very common. Almost everyone would have experienced it at least once in their lifetime. It comes about due to over-excitation of the eyelid muscles. It is usually harmless although it can be rather annoying! It may be triggered by a variety ...

If your eyelashes are rubbing your cornea, you probably have an entropion rather than an ectropion. There are several types of entropion, the most common of which is age related 'involutional' entropion. In these cases, either simple eyelid stitches are done which rotate the eyelashes outwards, o...

Hi there! I'm sorry that your chalazion has lasted for so long! There are some conservative measures that you can take to see if the chalazion resolves on its own - lid hygiene, warm compress, and antibiotic ointment. I usually ask my patients to perform lid hygiene. Purch...
