Being a spectacle wearer for almost a decade (Short-sightedness -3.25 and astigmatism -1.00), the idea of laser eye surgery is particularly appealing. In Oct 2017, I decided to do a research on the available Laser Eye Surgery procedures in Singapore as well as a capable and reputable surgeon.
After much consideration and contemplation, I finalised my decision on DR DAVID CHAN, the Medical Director of the clinic; ATLAS EYE SPECIALIST CENTRE @ Paragon Medical Centre, #07-09.
What attracted my attention is his outstanding portfolio. DR DAVID CHAN is fully qualified and registered with the UK and Canadian Medical Council as well as Singapore. In addition, he was also the a surgical instructor at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and University of Calgary in Canada. These qualifications that he possessed speak greatly of his experiences in the field of optometry, which further boosted the amount of confidence I have to allow him to operate on my eyes.
Moreover, the clinic also provides all THREE main surgical procedures that are available in the market, allowing a higher flexibility in the choices. In addition to the doctor's experiences and skill, another main consideration factor I had is also the quality of the customer service, which after several reviews from my friends who also visited this clinic particularly mentioned that the service is top-notched.
I've heard many poor reviews from my friends where they felt like that they were in a production line during the day of the surgery. I then decided to book a LASIK suitability screening with the clinic and was directed to Miss Mei who is extremely pleasant and friendly to communicate with (she later also became my main POC when I've any doubts with the procedures and medications).
DAY OF LASIK SUITABILITY SCREENING: I was booked for a 3 hour session in the clinic, where they evaluate the suitability of my eyes for Laser Eye Surgery procedures. The staffs that performed the tests are highly professional and friendly.
After a series of tests, it ended off with a personal consultation with DR DAVID CHAN as he shared his professional advice. I was told that I was suitable for all the 3 generation Laser Eye procedures. Through out the procedure, there was not a moment of hard-selling. The overall procedure was extremely smooth and assuring.
After much contemplation, I decided to go for the ReLEx SMILE Surgery (3rd Generation), which DR DAVID CHAN highly advocates, who also happened to be one of the pioneering specialists capable of such procedure in Singapore.
This clinic does not offer same day suitability screening and surgery unlike other clinic, with the justification that the pupil is dilated during the screening procedure. DR DAVID CHAN believes that it is essential for the pupils to "reset" in order to facilitate the operation procedures.
As a patient, this strongly boost the confidence I have with the doctor, especially when he is a perfectionist (like myself).
DAY OF SURGERY: Finally the day of the surgery (2 days after the screening), the day where I can finally live comfortably without the troubles of spectacle. I arrived at 0830 for the surgical appointment and was greeted with warm smiles from the staffs. Upon payment, I donned the surgical gown followed by antiseptically cleaning my eyes area. I was quite anxious as it was my first time doing a surgery.
As i entered the OT, this feeling quickly dissipated as the highly trained nurse proceeded with the necessary pre-operation procedures. Everything was extremely smooth like a well-oiled machine.
DR DAVID CHAN was also extremely assuring throughout the operation which really eased the nervousness I was experiencing.
The whole surgery was PAINLESS and in less than 30 minutes, I was out of the OT! (Speaking about efficiency). The nurse then proceeded with issuing my medicine and BAM, I'm done. I was then advised to sleep as much as possible after the surgery (which I did) and also to apply the eye medications religiously.
DAY AFTER SURGERY (POST OP DAY 1): Upon waking up, I was amazed that I could see everything so clearly! It was surreal, as I could look at the wall clock in my room without fumbling around for my spectacles.
I had minimal effects of dry eyes except in the morning, which was quickly eased after applying the lubricating eye drops.
Back at the clinic, I did an eye test with DR DAVID CHAN and was told that everything was recovering nicely and I have a 6/6 vision. This was totally beyond my expectations. I was then advised to lubricate my eyes generously in order to allow the eyes to be primed for recovery.
Overall, I had an extremely pleasant experience in the clinic. I'm beyond grateful for their effort to make everything as comfortable as possible. The only regret I have is not doing this earlier!
