Eye & LASIK Profile Image

Eye & LASIK

LASIK is eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness by using a laser to reshape the eye's cornea, while cataract surgery replaces a cloudy lens from your eye with an artificial lens to restore clear vision.

LASIK overview

LASIK is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

The LASIK surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a laser or microkeratome to reshape the eye's cornea in order to improve visual acuity.

For most people, LASIK provides a long-lasting alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Cataract surgery overview

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacification, which is referred to as a cataract.

Many peoples' first symptoms are strong glare from lights and small light sources at night, along with reduced acuity at low light levels.

During cataract surgery, a patient's cloudy natural cataract lens is removed and replaced with a synthetic lens to restore the lens's transparency. Following surgical removal of the natural lens, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant is inserted.

Well over 90% of operations are successful in restoring useful vision, with a low complication rate. d.

First, let’s take a step back, and look at how the most common type of retinal detachments (rhegmatogenous retinal detachment) form. These retinal detachments develop when the retina develops a tear, or a hole. And the tear or hole develops if the vitreous gel next to the...

There could be several possibilities depending on what your doctor meant exactly. One possibility is that the doctor meant that he/she cannot fully correct your myopia with LASIK, and that you would expect to have residual myopia even straight after any attempted LASIK correction. In this cas...

Hi there! I'm sorry to learn that your dry eye condition is causing you discomfort. Please resist the temptation to rub! In my years of practice, I have seen some very bad consequences from vigourous eye-rubbing, including cataract and retinal detachment, which can be sight th...

This answer discusses the issue in general, and is not intended as specific advice for any particular patient. But yes, in short, retinal detachment can be prevented. Here's the long answer: There are several kinds of retinal detachment, but the ones that most people refer ...

This is a common answer to why Ophthalmologists are so concerned about childhood myopia! Many epidemiological studies throughout the world including in Singapore are conclusive in the link between glaucoma and the prevalence of myopia. However on the individual level itself, the ...

Can You Go For LASIK If You Are Pregnant? S'porean Ophthalmologists Explain Why It's Better To Wait

While LASIK is a fairly fast and straightforward procedure, many women wonder if it's advisable to do it during or after pregnancy.

Experienced ophthalmologists and gynaecologists on the DxD platform shared their professional advice with a DxD reader who had just given birth. She intends to breastfeed and wanted to find out when's the best time to go for LASIK

Here's what they had to say.

This sounds like a simple question, but is actually terribly complicated! The treatment for glaucoma depends on many factors, including the diagnosis (Underlying cause of the glaucoma), severity of the glaucoma and the target intraocular pressure (in comparison with the open...

Hi there! Symptoms of glaucoma can either be from build-up of pressure within the eye, or visual loss as a result of the high pressures. Glaucoma can be broadly divided into two categories, "open" or "closed" angle, depending on the configuration of the drainage angle of the eye, ...

Hi there! Diabetes can affect the blood vessels that deliver oxygen to the eye, resulting in a lack of oxygen in the cells in the eye. When this happens, the eye responds by producing new blood vessels, with the hope of getting more oxygen delivered to its cells. However, thes...

Yes, generally speaking, the risk of regression is somewhat higher the higher a patient's pre-existing myopia before undergoing LASIK. Factors contributing to this include the fact that the corneal shape is changed more for high corrections, and also because some very high myopes may not fully stab...
