Overview

Hand surgeons perform a wide variety of operations such as fracture repairs, releases, transfer and repairs of tendons and reconstruction of injuries, rheumatoid deformities and congenital defects.

They also perform microsurgical reattachment of amputated digits and limbs, microsurgical reconstruction of soft tissues and bone, nerve reconstruction, and surgery to improve function in paralysed upper limbs.

Dr Lee carefully explained to me the issue with my finger, the treatment and what to expect. The procedure went very well and was relatively painless, as was my recovery. I am so pleased with the outcome. My finger is fully functioned again! The office staff is also very helpful I must say. However, I wish I hadn't waited so long.

When I did not heal (as advised by my 1st doctor) at 2.5 months post-op, I decided to seek 2nd opinion with Dr Jonathan Lee.

He was professional and I feel comfortable with his prognosis in the end. Post-op was good and i am on the road to good recovery.

Dear Bluvelvet, From the photo, there is no obvious lump seen. This lump is like to be located deeper beneath the skin. Some possibilities include an underlying cyst, swelling of the tendon sheath, or ganglion. It is advisable for you to see your doctor for a closer examinat...

Dear Shirleen This is a common problem particularly in younger patients and we have had a number come into the Sports Clinic with these symptoms. Often it is not due to a tendon or muscle issue but comes from a scapulo-thoracic bursa . This is a potential space that sits betwe...

Dear JT, Unfortunately, the swelling is not very obvious from the clinical photograph. I think for a proper diagnosis, you should get this checked out by your doctor. Some comon causes of swelling around the wrist include a ganglion. But you will require a close examination t...

Dear Fire Dr Henry has already provided an excellent summary to the different types of arthritis that can occur. Just wanted to add that the cyst could be a simple ganglion from your computer use. Sometimes with excessive pressure, these can develop and the easiest way to man...

Hi Marc, There can be several causes of wrist discomfort, including joint, tendon, or ligament problems. If there is no preceeding trigger ( ie. I would presume trauma/ fall/ extreme heavy laods), it would unlikely be a fracture. Pain on the thumb side of the wrist, commonly can ...

Hi Moi, Yes, what Dr Dinesh said holds true. I think if you have persistent wrist pain despite a “normal” X-ray, we have to consider other potential problems. 1. Sometime very small minute cracks/ microfractures may not be seen on a standard X-ray. It may be neces...

Dear MentaikoSalmon, Given your short account of the problem, it would appear that your stiffness is caused by a tendon inflammation (tenosynovitis) - swelling and irritation of the flexor tendons that bend the fingers. At one end of the spectrum (in the acute or active phases) t...

Hi Shirleen, I'm sorry to hear that you are still symptomatic after your surgery. It is certainly unusual for you to have symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome in both hands at the same time. As you are already seeing both a neurologist and a hand surgeon, I am sure a variety...

Hi Gloop, thank you for your question. Although arthritis might be a cause of your symptoms, there are other conditions that can account for your symptoms such as a simple sprain of the joints of the fingers (from your exercise, from using computers etc). Furthermore, there are many...

Dear Analisse, Thank you for the email. From the picture, this does look like a digital myxoid cyst. This usually occurs over the distal finger joints and may be associated with underlying osteoarthritis. The cyst may have a connection with the underlying joint. Some simple tr...
