Bio

The Hospital was opened on 24 June 1985 as Singapore’s first restructured hospital. Each year, the Hospital attends to more than one million patients.

As an academic health institution, patient safety and good clinical outcomes remain the focus of the hospital as it continues to play a key role in the training of doctors, nurses, allied health and other healthcare professionals. Translational research plays a pivotal role in the Hospital’s three-pronged focus, paving the way for new cures and treatment.

A member of the National University Health System, it is the principal teaching hospital of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the NUS Faculty of Dentistry.

I recently had my grandchild admitted here for 2 days..generally good care but there were just too many young interns - many of them in groups of 4-5. They were all courteous ‘doctors in the making’ and we had no issues in helping them hone their investigation skills but kind of got tired after repeated response to the same set of questions. They perhaps need to plan this in a more structured manner and recognize that it is generally not easy for us to identify who is a doctor or who is a student.

My Dad was admitted to NUH on Monday, 29 January, for spinal surgery. Until he was discharged on Friday, 9 February, the staff at NUH took very good care of him, for which we are immensely grateful.

As I visited him daily, I had the opportunity to observe the doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, cleaners, porters and other staff go about their work, and I was very impressed. Not by their professionalism or patience, which is to be expected, but by how they were always cheerful, and genuinely seemed to care. It just made the bleak experience of suffering an illness that little bit more bearable.

Everyone took the time to listen to my Dad when he wanted to share how many grandchildren he had, or how he hoped to recover and go fishing again. They smiled when he grumbled about how he had to repeat his name and NRIC several times a day, and were apologetic when they had to insert a cannula over and over again. I sincerely applaud NUH for having such great, dedicated staff.

My family and I would like to express our gratitude and thanks to Prof Gabriel Liu and his team of doctors who operated on my Dad and relieved him of his pain. To the nurses at the High Dependency Ward 27, who were all amazing. The nurses and staff at Ward 53 where he stayed pre-surgery, and Ward 51 post-surgery.

In particular, Staff Nurse Alexander Ho, who quickly became my Dad's favourite nurse. He was always there when I visited in the morning, and was there when I stayed at my Dad's bedside till late, and kindly, patiently and cheerfully answered all our questions and attended to all my Dad's needs, even when he was clearly busy. His congeniality was infectious, and he could put my Dad in a better mood just by talking to him. We are truly thankful that he was there throughout my Dad's stay.

Big thanks also to all the staff who work behind the scenes - the cooks (my father was surprised to find that he enjoyed the tasty meals), the cleaners who disinfect the ward twice a day, the guy who brings the meals... I wish I remembered all your names!
My Dad is back home for Chinese New Year, and while it'll be some time before he can go fishing again, we are grateful for the new lease of life he has been given. Thanks!
