Neurology

Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the nervous systems.

Overview

During a neurological examination, the neurologist reviews the patient's health history with special attention to the current condition. The patient then takes a neurological exam.

Typically, the exam tests:

  • mental status
  • function of the cranial nerves (including vision)
  • strength
  • coordination
  • reflexes, and
  • sensation.

This information helps the neurologist determine whether the problem exists in the nervous system.

Localization of the pathology is the key process by which neurologists develop their differential diagnosis. Further tests may be needed to confirm a diagnosis and ultimately guide therapy and appropriate management.

Hi, migraines are a type of headache which can have various types of triggers or factors that cause an episode to develop. These can include bright or flickering lights. Other reported triggers are disturbances in sleep patterns, certain types of food, and alcohol. It is possible that the 'ha...

A proper assessment of your symptoms is warranted. While your MRI will reveal the affected sites, these have to correlate with your clinical symptoms. Typically pinched C3 and C4 level spinal nerves should not lead to spasms as these do not supply big muscle groups in the neck. Treatment for su...

Thank you for your question - I can only imagine how frustrating this is for you. My only word of advice might be to try exercise. Sometime doing exercise can help with stress, tension and help your ability to achieve more restful sleep. If you are experiencing symptoms such...

Headaches are sinister if they occur in the mornings and gradually progressive worse. The headaches are usually due to increase in pressures in the brain. In the event of that, it is important to see a doctor and get a brain scan ( MRI).

Thank you for your question. For your case, vasovagal syncope is triggered by straining, long periods of standing, or stress. This can cause a sudden drop in your heart rate and blood pressure. There are a couple of things you can try before seeing your cardiologist: ...

Hi, Numbness associated with shooting pain are some characteristics of neuropathic pain. When the discomfort is isolated, it indicates a higher likelihood of a localised cause. Likely causes include 1. Meralgia parasthetica, or also known as pain symptoms arising an irrita...

It sounds like you suffered an attack of vasogagal syncope, which is a largely benign overreaction of the nervous system to certain stimuli. Ie your IBS symptoms resulted in your fainting episode. Seizures are generally determined when witnessed, although certain telltale signs ...

These symptoms are consistent with a migraine. If they occur frequently, it is advisable to take steps to reduce the attack severity and frequency. This can be done by well-chosen daily preventative medication used for about 6 months. Although there is no cure for migraines, the ...

Thank you for getting in touch to share your headaches. Headache is extremely common. It will be difficult to diagnose anything without seeing you in person. Headache is one of those conditions where there is no specific "Test" that can 100% diagnose your headache. Doctors co...
