Bio

SGH sees patients referred by Family Physicians as well as specialists in both public and private practice. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical services within one complex. There are 5 National Specialist Centres co-located on SGH Campus, facilitating a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. SGH practises team-based care, provided by clinicians, nurses as well as allied health professionals.

Every year, the SGH Campus caters to over 1 million patients. With a 10,000-strong workforce, SGH accounts for about a quarter of the total acute hospital beds in the public sector and about one-fifth of acute beds nationwide.

SGH is accredited by the Joint Commission International for meeting its standards of safety and quality in healthcare. It is also the first in Asia to achieve the Magnet Recognition in 2010 for nursing excellence awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

SGH is a leading teaching hospital for undergraduate medical training as well as postgraduate and advanced training of specialist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

Students from both the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School spend a substantial part of their curriculum in SGH. The hospital’s medical staffs hold teaching positions at both schools.

It also serves as a clinical teaching hospital for student nurses, radiographers and therapists from the polytechnics and medical institutions here and the Asia Pacific region.

SGH seeks to bring its patients new and better care and therapies through research.

Clinical research is an integral part of SGH’s institutional practice and is actively carried out by clinicians and scientists from medical, nursing and allied health departments. The hospital leverages on its multi-disciplinary capabilities, depth of specialization, a large patient base and its research affiliations with renowned centres locally and globally.

Collaborating with academic partner Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, which is located on SGH Campus, the hospital’s goal is to develop the Campus into a hub for translational and clinical research.

My mum was admitted to SGH on 19 March 2018 for an operation at 12pm. Went at 10am for admission procedures. But got a sudden shock when a lady, not from SGH called at 2+pm to asked if we knew that operation has been postponed to 02 April 2018 ??? No one from SGH informed anything until this lady called. Mum waited till we picked her up at almost 4pm! Our entire family was very upset.

The only problem I encountered many times is the waiting either seeing the doctor or collection of medication. Should look into a way to refine this two issues. Many a time my appointment is in the early morning to see the specialist thereafter collecting medication, it usually ended mid-afternoon and upon arriving back home it's early evening. The whole day is practically gone. The appointed time is never on time. That way is just snowball. Sometimes it's quite frustrating especially for working adult or everybody in general.

I had a thyroidectomy on 26th Feb 2018 I would like to express my deepest gratitude to doctor Tan Hiang Khoon and team. I admire their passion, energy and expertise. Healthcare is a tiring job and not always appreciated. I am very thankful and happy to be in the hands of this lovely team. However there is still room for improvement as the high dependency ward is very noisy. During handover I can easily overhear what each patient has and what is needed for their care. While I really love the energy they have among working colleagues, it is actually a bit disturbing to patients, and there are no toilets for patients who can walk. I ended up constipated and only got better after I getting a normal ward.
