Wisdom Teeth Profile Image

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom tooth extraction or wisdom tooth surgery are medical procedures to remove the third molars, teeth that typically erupt from the late teenage years into the early twenties.

What is wisdom tooth extraction?

Wisdom tooth extraction or wisdom tooth surgery are medical procedures to remove the third molars, teeth that typically erupt from the late teenage years into the early twenties.

Is wisdom tooth removal a major surgery?

Wisdom tooth removal can be performed as an extraction or as a surgery. When a tooth is completely erupted through the gum and forceps can remove it easily, a tooth extraction is enough. But if a tooth is not fully erupted or not erupted through the gum, an incision to remove gum or bone may be needed. This is a wisdom tooth surgical extraction. Sometimes, the dentist or dental specialist would need to break the tooth into a few parts before it can be completely removed from the gum and jaw.

Is wisdom tooth removal painful?

Because wisdom tooth removal without some form of anaesthesia would be painful, your dentist or dental specialist might recommend local anaesthesia, sedation, or general anaesthesia to help you undergo the procedure without pain. Your dentist or dental specialist will advise us on which pain relief option is most appropriate for your individual situation.

When it comes to wisdom teeth where there are episodes of discomfort and pain, I am in favour of extracting them and here's why: 1. Recurrent gum infection Based on your Xray, the lower wisdom teeth are quite upright. However due to the lack of space, they are still cove...

Sorry to hear that there is a fragment left behind at the extraction site. I do agree with Dr Gerald that it sometimes happens to even the best of us. While trying to extract a tooth, sometimes it makes more sense to leave a small little fragment behind, than to scour and cause mo...

Thank you for your question! And im sorry to hear that you are in discomfort and that you have been having an impacted wisdom tooth for 2 years. The picture shows that the tooth is partially erupted from the gum and is still hidden under the gum flap. When wisdom teeth begin t...

It sounds as though you have pericoronitis of the lower left wisdom tooth. This is an infection caused usually by food trapping and bacteria build-up underneath the gum flap covering the wisdom tooth. The white liquid you can express from the infected area is pus, which is a co...

No one likes to have their wisdom tooth removed and I don't blame you for wanting to avoid it unless absolutely necessary! According to your X-ray, your bottom left wisdom tooth has erupted in a upright, non-impacted position and it seems to be in good function with the opposin...

Erupting wisdom teeth can potentially come with a few problems, ulcers being one of the more common ones. When wisdom teeth begin to erupt out of the gum as like in your case now, it is not unusual for infections to set in. This is because small morsels of food gets trapped ...

From the picture you have sent in, it does seem that there is a " hole " in the gum where food can fall in and get stuck inside. What you could do is to get from your dentist an irrigation syringe and blunt needle to flush out food that gets in there. Alternatively, you could v...
