About Dr Fong Shee Yan

Dr Fong Shee Yan obtained his bachelors from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1996. In 2003, he underwent further training in Orthopaedic Surgery and was awarded the N Balachandran Award for Outstanding Orthopaedic Trainee from the Singapore Orthopaedic Association. He finished his fellowship in Spine Surgery at the Calgary Spine Centre in Canada between the years 2004 and 2005 then became a Consultant in Spine Surgery. His subspecialty is in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery performed as day surgery cases without needing hospitalization, such as micro-discectomy and percutaneous discectomy for slipped disc, vertebroplasty for fractures of the spine and Facet joint and pars inter-articularis injections.

Open back surgery is often a solution for back-related ailments that are considered long-term or potentially severe but what exactly are the factors that determine whether a patient requires open back surgery?

Dr Fong Shee Yan is an orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in initiating and expanding Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.
