How can someone who has autoimmune disease safely try for a baby?

Doctor's Answers 1

Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune skin condition where the skin produces antibody against components of the skin (desmogleins) resulting in easy blistering of the skin. This condition usually requires a long period of oral immunosuppressive medications.

If you are considering pregancy, it is best to be at a time when the disease is stable and under control as you do not want to escalate treatment while you are pregnant. You have to inform your dermatologist of your intention to conceive.

Your doctor can then advise you on what immunosuppressive medications you can be on and what medications you have to be off and adjust your medications accordingly.

What are the treatment options for Pemphigus Vulgaris?

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris. Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune condition where the body produces an antibody against desmoglein, which is the a protein that cements the skin cells together. This results in skin fragility and blisters and erosions on the skin or oral mucosa. The mainstay of treatment for pemphigus vulgaris involves the use of oral steroids and immunosuppressive agents. Oral steroids have long-term side effects and usually fairly high doses of steroids are required to control this .

How can I control bad eczema flares without using oral steroids?

I’m sorry to hear about your bad skin condition. In life, its always a battle. We always have to weigh our odds in everything we do (or NOT do). Same goes for medication, our first pharmacology lecturer to “choose our poisons wisely”, and very apt indeed. If your flares are causing you a lot of problems, sometimes the benefits of using them might outweigh the “perceived” risks. Certainly, there are potential risks of using oral and cream steroids, but they are meant for short term use.
