Are there any useful natural remedies or supplements for eczema?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

Evening primrose oil is a common supplement advocated for treating eczema. However, robust scientific data is lacking and in real life, many eczema sufferers derive no benefits from taking this or any other supplements.

This seems to be what my patients tell me as well. The key preventive measures lie with the avoidance of known aggravating factors such as stress, heat, sweating, friction, etc and to diligently repair/maintain the skin barrier using mild cleansers and regular use of moisturizers.

Judicious use of low-mid potency steroid creams under your doctor's supervision will treat eczema flares should they occur.

Hope this helps!

Which doctor should I see in Singapore for dry and itchy skin?

It does sound like your daughter is still having eczema. In atopice eczema, the skin is often dry and sensitive and itchy. The constant scratching certainly does not help as it leads to breaks in the skin and worsens the eczema. Eczema can also affect other areas and is not always confined to the flexures. In eczema, besides dryness, the skin is also often red and inflamed. Dr Ethan’s advice not to scratch and to moisturize frequently is excellent. However, if the skin is red and inflamed, treatment to bring down the inflammation such as topical steroids or antibiotics may be needed.

How long should steroid cream for eczema be used for? (photo)

Hi, We usually would advice applying steroid creams till the rash has cleared. When the rash resolves, it may leave a brownish pigmentation and this is termed post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This pigmentation will gradually resolve on it own. You should stop the topical steroid application at this stage. Prolonged use of topical steriods can lead to thinning of the skin and skin atrophy. Striae or stretch marks can develop with overuse of topical steroids. The risk of skin thinning depends on the strength, amount and frequency of application of steroids.
