What can cause blurry, distorted vision after two retina detachment surgeries?

Doctor's Answers 2

Retinal detachment surgeries are usually considered major surgeries and will take weeks and even months for the patient to have full recovery. Prognosis depends on how early or late the retinal detachment was diagnosed, how early treatment was administered and to what extend the detachment was prior to surgery.

During the recovery stage, patients will notice very gradual improvement of vision and may even feel like the vision is blurry and distorted at the initial stages. It is thus important to work closely with your eye doctor to better understand what the recovery and visual function of the eye will be like.

However, if you notice a sudden deterioration of vision during the recovery stage or any symptoms that deviates from what was discussed and explained by your eye doctor, do flag it up immediately as it could potentially be other eye conditions.

Ophthalmologist

I'm sorry to hear about your persistent blurry and distorted vision after 2 retinal detachment surgeries.

Unfortunately this is not an unusual finding, as such symptoms may occur due to post operation epiretinal membrane, striae across the macula (previous macular-off retinal detachment), or from post-operative proliferative vitreo-retinopathy .

Other ophthalmic complications not related to the retina detachment, but to the surgery itself include secondary cataract formation, or refractive error after a buckle is placed.

You should consult your attending ophthalmologist for a thorough evaluation and a detailed discussion of your current situation. Your attending doctor would be best placed to advise how you can move forward in addressing your concerns.

Best of luck!

Is it normal to experience near vision loss after ReLEx® SMILE®?

Glad to hear that you are now able to see relatively well at far distances 2 days after ReLEx SMILE. From what you have described, it seems like you have some difficulty in reading at the moment. Without the benefit of examining you, I can only offer a few possibilities why this might be. To be honest, 2 days is still fairly early days in terms of visual recovery for any laser vision correction. At this time, there will be some element of post-operative healing present.

How long should I lay off swimming after ReLEx® SMILE®?

It is good that you take notice of such symptoms and are aware of how your eyes are feeling as well as closely following the eye doctor’s advice. With regards to your situation, I would assume you swim in a swimming pool, yes? Swimming pool water contains significant amounts of chlorine and other chemicals which act as a disinfectant for hygiene purposes as public pools are shared areas. A common side effect of chlorine is that it dries out your skin, hair and eyes, and more so for the eyes if you do not use a pair of swimming googles.
