What are the causes of brown stains on the inside of my teeth?

Doctor's Answers 1

Stains on the tooth surfaces can be caused by:

  1. Dietary substances: tea, coffee, red wine, herbal medicines are common causes of brown tooth discolouration.

  2. Tobacco: cigarette smoking, tobacco chewing or betel nut chewing (if tobacco is included) can deposit stains.

  3. Chlorhexidine is a common antimicrobial compound added to mouth rinses used after dental surgery.

Stains can be kept under control using whitening toothpaste that contain abrasives to polish the surface of the tooth. Professional cleaning also uses abrasives to remove surface stains. Difficult-to-reach areas (in between the teeth, inside fissures) can be cleaned with a bicarbonate powder delivered by high-pressure water jet (Prophyjet).

Using a home whitening system (with bleaching trays and gels prescribed by your dentist) can help as well. Using bleaching trays ensures that the bleaching gel does not get deactivated by salivary peroxidase enzymes which reduces the whitening effect.

What are some important and memorable causes of dental trauma?

Most cases that I see, Dr Gerald has seen as well because in our clinic we do a multi-disciplinary approach. Dr Gerald is very strong in surgery but some patients like the little girl who’s just 10 years old -- we’re not going to put dental implants in her. But for some patients with trauma, a lot of them tend to end up with root canal complications. For adult patients, usually, the nerve is not going to heal itself, so we have to do the conventional root canal treatment.

How can I get porcelain veneers for my teeth without the need to shave off my teeth?

There are very few situations where there is no need to remove some bulk from the tooth to fit veneers. You have large gaps in between your teeth. Your teeth are already thinned down from previous fillings or acid erosion (you must still have enamel covering the tooth surface for predictable long-term bonding). If BOTH of these criteria exist, then it may be possible to have porcelain veneers without much trimming. Trimming tooth structure for veneers achieves 2 functions: Creates an end-stop for the porcelain to end and to allow easier seating of the veneer.
