Teeth alignment can be done using fixed appliances (fixed braces) or removable appliances that are worn for extended periods in the mouth.
Placing anything inside the mouth increases the rate of plaque accumulation since normal salivary fluid flow dynamics will be altered. This increased rate of plaque accumulation increases the risk of developing cavities and gum disease, especially if meticulous oral hygiene is not practised.
In high-risk patients, even a few months of plaque accumulation can cause cavitation to form on the tooth surfaces. Patients on fixed braces can develop unsightly brown/yellow patches around brackets and florid gum swelling. These may not be reversible once the braces come off. In severe cases of gum swelling, surgical removal of the excess gum tissue may be required.
Most of these problems can be prevented by maintaining immaculate oral hygiene while you are having treatment.
