Thank you for your question. The type of treatment suitable for the scars would depend on the location of and the type of scars that are present. Scars could be keloidal, hypertrophic, widened, depressed; and may be hypo or hyper-pigmented.

If your scars are keloidal, then serial corticosteriod injections in combination with small amounts of botulinum toxin prior to surgical revision would be ideal.

If your scars are hypertrophic rather than keloidal, then serial corticosteriod injections would suffice. Widened and depressed scars require surgical revision.

If hyperpigmentation is the only issue, then a variety of lasers could help to lighten it.

Hypopigmented scars require surgical revision or tattooing.

I hope this answers your question.

As Dr Samuel pointed out, different scars require different treatment modalities. Hypertrophic scars benefit from steroid injections and also certain fractional lasers.

Fractional ablative lasers like the CO2 or Erbium-Yag achieve very good results on clinical studies but are accompanied by much downtime.

The latest fractional non-ablative lasers such as the Erbium-Glass and Thulium (found on platforms like the De Oro Dual/Fraxel Dual/Sellas Evo/LaseMD) provide good cosmetic outcomes for such scars too with minimal downtime.

My advice is to find an aesthetic practitioner who has experience with using various modalities for scar treatment.

Hope this helps.

Is the fractional radiofrequency, CO2 laser or erbium laser more effective for deep acne scars?

With regards to your question: Fractional CO2 lasers generally penetrates deeper than Erbium lasers Fractional CO2 lasers also generally penetrates deeper than Fractional RF devices EXCEPT Microneedle RF machines that can reach a depth of 3. 5mm (only in some machines) which in this case will have a greater penetration depth as compared to Fractional CO2 machines.

How many sessions of fractional laser is required for mild to moderate acne scars?

With regards to your question, The number of sessions really depends on 2 main factors: How your skin reacts to the treatment. For some individuals, good results may be seen after 3 sessions whilst others may require 6 or even more sessions. The depth of penetration of the laser. If mild settings are used then more sessions may be required and results may not be as satisfactory. Additionally, as Dr Chua CY has pointed out, combination treatments usually yield more effective results. I personally do not usually just stick with one kind of treatment modality to treat acne scars.
