How do I prevent a keloid after an open heart surgery from getting bigger?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for the question about a keloid after open heart surgery. These are very commonly seen and can be controlled with a combination treatment of VBEAM laser and steroid injections into the scar. Early treatment of your scar will lead to better results and helps to prevent scar worsening. Depending on the size and thickness of your scar, repeated 4-5 treatments 1 month apart are usually required to flatten and lighten the scar.

Do see a doctor or dermatologist experienced in scar treatment for help.

How are keloid infections usually treated?

Keloid infections are treated similarly to other infections. However, as keloids are composed of thick scar tissue with little blood supply, keloid infections may be slower and more difficult to clear compared to normal tissue infections. The key management principles are: Identify the most likely pathogen/bacteria causing the infection Eliminate the infection by cleansing the affected area with an antiseptic and/or a course of appropriate oral antibiotics Surgical drainage if medical treatment fails and significant pus forms.
