How do I treat a yeast infection?

Doctor's Answers 2

Hi,

No egocort and gentriderm may not be the most suitable for yeast infection.

Treatment really depends on whether the yeast infection is recurrent and the symptoms severe or mild. Generally if the yeast infection is mild to moderate, anti fungal cream like butoconazole, clotrimazole, miconazole, and terconazole can be used. Otherwise you can use suppositories 1, 3 or 7 day course.

For more recurrent or severe yeast infection, oral antifungal course of up to 14 days can be used. Sometimes doctors will also put you on a maintenance of once a week oral fluconazole tablets for 6 months. You need to see a doctor to decide the best course of action.

For simple uncomplicated yeast infections ( non recurrent), a single dose of gynotravagum ovule pessary should clear it up. That’s the easiest regime.

Alternatively a course of canestan pessaries easily obtained from any pharmacy should work too. If it’s the first episode I suggest to see a gynae to confirm it is truly a yeast infection and not something else before treatment.

How do I treat an itchy vagina?

Hi there. Based on your description, you may be having a vaginal yeast infection. I do not think getting medications over the counter is a good idea. The best thing to do is to see a doctor to get a proper assessment and treatment. If you are having a vaginal yeast infection, simple medication would cure the problem and your symptoms will disappear within 1-2 days after medication.

How can I prevent recurring yeast infections?

Hi! I suggest to have it fully evaluated by seeing a gyne, and doing some swabs. This is to confirm if it truly is a yeast infection. Quite a number of women mistake normal discharge for yeast infection. It is usual for discharge to be thicker and more opaque before the period. A true clinically significant yeast infection will have a lot of curd-like lumpy white/yellow discharge and a VERY irritated red and sore vagina/vulva. True recurrent yeast infections can be managed with regular suppressive antifungal treatment, probiotics and correction of any underlying predisposing factors.
