How does orthodontic treatment improve lip support?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for your question. As the lips lie directly over the upper and lower teeth, the position of the teeth and the underlying jaw bone can have a direct influence on the lip position. The lip position can either be too flat/ dished inwards or too protrusive/hard to close.

If the lip position is too flat/dished inwards and the teeth are also inclined inwards and crooked, orthodontic treatment to align the teeth and pushed the teeth outwards can have a positive impact on the lip support.

If the lip position is too protrusive/hard to close, and the teeth are proclined or sticking outwards, orthodontic treatment to retract the teeth and push them backwards can improve the lip position and make it easier to close the lips more comfortably.

However, there are other factors such as age, muscle tone, the thickness of the lips and the underlying jaw bony structure that also have a direct impact on the lip support. It would be best to have a face to face consultation and discuss your concerns about the lip support with your dentist/orthodontist.

Hope this helps and all the very best,

How do veneers affect the treatment plan for Invisalign?

I would suggest having a prototype of the veneers made with the ideal shape, size and position of your front teeth so that you and your dentist can visualize the final aesthetic result of combining Invisalign and veneers. At the prototype stage, tweaks to the veneers can be done easily and quickly. Once you are happy with the prototype, it will be used to guide optimal positioning of your teeth using Invisalign and also as a guide for the final ceramic veneers. Having a prototype also ensures that you get a preview of the final outcome that will guide you in making treatment decisions.

Are there any alternatives to filing down teeth during Invisalign treatment?

there are several ways to create spaces during your Invisalign treatment: 1) IPR (filing) 2) Buccal expansion (moving your back teeth outwards) 3) Proclination (moving your front teeth out) 4) Distalization (moving your back teeth backwards, usually into the space previously occupied by your wisdom tooth) Generally my practice is to create space through a combination of several techniques, which means that sometimes we can minimize the amount of filing needed.
