How long do porcelain veneers last for?

Doctor's Answers 1

Porcelain veneers do not have definite life span. If your veneers are still functional and aesthetically pleasing, it is not necessary to replace them.

However, fluorosis staining is one of the most common staining due to excessive fluoride intake. It is also a common reason for people to seek porcelain or resin veneers treatment due to severe forms of fluorosis.

More often, porcelain veneers fail through fractures or debonding. Sometimes they might be removed due to decay underneath the margins of the veneers. Infrequently, we've some patients who have had veneers for a long time (over 15 years) requesting for a new set because the colour has faded or the character of the smile has changed.

Our oral cavity is a dynamic environment. Thus, it's very important to understand the factors that could affect your veneers as they were made years ago. Many things might have changed.

Some other possible conditions that might required veneers to be replaced:

1. Biting support could have been lost with the lost of the back molar teeth, thus putting pressure on the front veneers.

2. Worsen gum conditions that led to infections and diseased gums, causing teeth migration, gaps or even position and angulation changes.

Are there any alternatives to braces for minor misalignment of teeth?

Hi Ilovetoffeenutfrapp! Retainers do undergo wear and tear with time, it depends on the individual case, as some people grind more than others and different retainer materials would have different results as well. With the advances in digital dentistry, some dentists and orthodontists now have intraoral scanners and software systems, which are able to predictably and accurately align your teeth using their own in-house custom clear aligners. For minor misalignment, this would work great for you, and the cost should not exceed a few hundred dollars if only 2-3 aligners are required.
