In general, treatment of gallstones during pregnancy is similar to the way gallstones are treated normally. There are special considerations that your doctor will have if you are pregnant and presenting with gallstones related issues. The most significant point will be the disease severity and whether surgery or endoscopy is anticipated.

If endoscopy or surgery is required, the risks of the procedure as well as the risk of sedation to you and your baby will have to be addressed. If x-rays are required during the procedure, you may need special protection such as an extra lead shield to protect your baby from radiation.

If possible, most doctor will defer the procedure to after delivery or till the second trimester to minimise any risk to your unborn child. No treatment is required if the gallstones are discovered incidentally without symptoms.

What is the best way to diagnose gallstones?

The most common investigation to detect the presence of gallstones is an ultrasound scan of the abdomen. Your doctor may also recommend some blood tests to look for problems related to the stones. At times, a CT scan may be proposed to you if your doctor is also looking out for possible tumour growths in your abdomen. When there is a suspicion of a gallstone being migrated into the bile duct, a special MRI scan known as MRCP may be required to study the bile ducts specifically.

What TCM treatments are available for gastric problems causing bloating and stomach discomfort?

From the TCM point of view, gastric problems are closely related to the function of spleen and stomach. These two organs are responsible for the transformation and transportation of the food that we consume. When the spleen and stomach is weakened, it can lead to many digestive issues such as bloated, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach-ache, ingestion etc. In TCM, the most common treatment for these internal problems would be herbal medicine. Herbal medicines are prescribed according to each patient's body constitution.
