Is dental bonding or veneers the best?

Doctor's Answers 1

Dental bonding is an universal term to describe something that is adhesively attached to the tooth. Usually it is referred to treating cavities or to close spacings between teeth.

If you are referring to using resin for smile makeover, then it is referred to as resin veneers as opposed to using ceramics which is referred to as porcelain veneers.

I will explain the similarities and differences here.

Resin veneers are made from resin filling materials and porcelain veneers are made from ceramic or glass. Resin veneers generally require slightly lesser trimming of teeth than porcelain veneers.

However, resin veneers tend to loose its lustre faster (3 - 4 years, requiring re-polishing) and generally needs to be replaced much earlier due to colour issues as compared to porcelain veneers.

In the hands of a skilled dental surgeon, both resin and porcelain veneers will yield excellent initial results as they both change the shape, colour, and arrangement of teeth.

Can chewing habits correct an asymmetric jaw?

I fully agree with Dr Lee that chewing on one side will do little to help with the problem. In my experience as an aesthetic physician, it is as Dr Lee said, most of us have mild asymmetries, and almost every case of asymmetry has a mixture of BOTH bony and muscular elements. If the asymmetry is bothering you, I would suggest some botox and fillers first to correct it as a temporary measure. I would refer to my dental or orthodontic colleagues to correct teeth alignment and jaw surgery for better functional outcomes and long-lasting results.

Do braces change your facial profile?

You have asked a very interesting question and I am afraid the answer is yes and no! I will try to explain it as best I can. Braces CAN change profiles: Braces can change profiles only when the orthodontists and the patient plan to get it changed from the START of the treatment. A good example is when patients complain that when taking photographs, they notice that their side profile is sticking out and they have a very full smile (most patients use the terms, I look like a horse!) In this case, braces can help to retract the teeth to allow the patient to have a softer, gentler profile.
