Why does the tip of my penis hurt when pressure is applied?

Doctor's Answers 1

There are two possible explanations: first, it could be a normal experience. Second, if there are other signs, one may also need to entertain the possibility of infection like urethritis.

In terms of sensitivity to touch and stimulation, most men find the heads of their penises to be the most sensitive. The urinary meatus may especially be senstive to pain when touched. Many men also like their scrotums stimulated during foreplay. Another area of sensitivity for many men is the perineum, the area between the scrotum and the rectum.

The urethra is the tube that runs from the bladder through the penis. When the urethra is inflamed, it is called urethritis. The urethra becomes swollen and causes burning pain when a person urinates. Other symptoms of urethritis may include itching or tingling of the penis, or pus discharge from the penis. One may also have pain with sex and masturbation.

Urethritis causes

Urethritis can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Such an infection can lead to conditions such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Urethritis can also be caused by injury or sensitivity or allergy to chemicals in lotions and other products.

Symptoms of urethritis in men typically include:

  • urethral discharge
  • penile itching or tingling
  • and dysuria

A diagnosis can be made if at least one of the following is present:

  • discharge
  • a positive result on a leukocyte esterase test in first-void urine
  • or at least 10 white blood cells per high-power field in urine sediment

The primary pathogens associated with urethritis are Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The goals of treatment include:

  • alleviating symptoms
  • preventing complications in the patient and his sexual partners
  • reducing the transmission of coinfections (particularly human immunodeficiency virus)
  • identifying and treating the patient's contacts
  • and encouraging behavioral changes that will reduce the risk of recurrence

How can a urologist help someone worried about his penis size?

In my clinical practice as a psychiatrist, I realise that many male patients are concerned about their penis size. In sex therapy sessions, a lot of time is spent on providing correct information and sex education to the couple so as to dispel any myths related to sexuality and sexual behaviour. A common myth amongst males is that a large penis results in a female partner being orgasmic during intercourse. This is based on the mistaken belief that the vagina is the woman's major sex organ, whereas, in truth, the woman's most sensitive genital organ is her clitoris [1].
