What can prolonged swelling on the lips be a sign of?

Doctor's Answers 1

There are a number of reasons why the lips may be persistently swollen.

A common cause is cheilitis or eczema of the lip. In this case, the lips may be swollen and red, dry and scaly.

Other causes of persistent lip swelling include granulomatous cheilitis and sarcoidosis, which are inflammatory conditions that can lead to persistent lip swelling. These conditions require a biopsy of the lip to confirm the diagnosis.

Angioedema is a common cause of lip swelling, but this is transient and usually not prolonged or persistent.

If you have prolonged lip swelling, it would be advisable for you to see your doctor or dermatologist for a proper assessment and diagnosis.
