What are ways to remove friction blisters on breasts due to breastfeeding and pumping?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

There are 2 aspects of management that will help:

First is prevention. Prevention of friction blisters focuses on decreasing friction between the skin and the device. This may be achieved by moisturizing the skin, getting more flexible suction cups, etc.

Second is actual treatment. Treatment of friction blisters focuses on getting the skin to heal quickly without complications. This may be achieved by gently pricking the blister with a sterile needle to drain out the blister fluid to relieve pressure, do NOT deroof the blister as the blister roof will act as a good biological dressing and reducing further trauma to the skin while it heals. Avoid also using an adherent plaster over the blister as it will deroof the blister during removal.

Hope this helps!

Hello, Thank you for the close-up photos, they are very informative. From these photos, there are a few conditions that come to mind, but it will be ideal for you to be assessed by a dermatologist as certain tests need to be done to ascertain the cause. 1. Dyshidrotic eczema: This is a type of eczema that usually affects hands and feet. It can be very itchy and lead to tiny blisters forming on the palms and soles. If the small blister breaks, there can be clear or yellowish fluid that flows out. You may have a history of eczema affecting other areas of your body.

How to treat persistent blisters on the hands due to dyshidrotic eczema?

Thanks for the question. Dyshidrotic eczema is a form of eczema that presents as tiny bubbles on the hands and feet. The rash is often itchy and the tiny bubbles can become more confluent to form larger blisters. The rash can also be painful when the blisters burst and there are raw areas of skin. It is important to avoid harsh soap and detergents and irritants as this can further aggravate the rash. Topical steroids and moisturizers are often prescribed to reduce the inflammation and control the eczema. This should be able to control the eczema in most cases.
