What are safe treatments available for hormonal acne while breastfeeding and how much do they cost?

Hi,

The key consideration of acne treatment during breastfeeding is that the medication used must not be secreted in the breast milk and cause harm to the baby.

If your acne is mild, all topical acne medications (benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, erythromycin, tretinoin, adapalene) are safe and should be used as first-line treatment either singly or in combination.

If your acne is moderately severe and requires oral medication, then oral erythromycin is safe to take. Avoid oral tetracyclines and isotretinoin. Blue-light phototherapy is a safe adjunctive treatment that may add benefit.

If your acne is severe and requires the use of isotretinoin therapy, then I would recommend that you stop breastfeeding before starting on treatment as safety data is this area is lacking and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Hope this helps!
