What are the criteria in determining the most suitable dental crown for my premolar?

Doctor's Answers 1

1. Is it an upper or lower premolar?

2. Does the tooth have a large filling?

3. Will it be a full or partial crown?

4. Will the crown be bonded or cemented?

5. Is the tooth root canal treated?

6. Does the tooth require a post and core?

7. Is the tooth discoloured? Does the tooth need significant colour correction?

8. Is the tooth cracked?

9. Is there grinding or clenching of teeth at night?

These are the criteria determining material and design selection for premolar crowns.

I have answered a similar question here and here.

Is it normal to experience pain and discomfort with hard foods and brushing teeth after root canal treatment?

Hi Yee Ham, I would say most patients take few days-weeks for proper healing of the tissues around the tooth. And even so, you should try not to use the tooth to eat hard food eg) nuts/ice etc. This is due to the fact that the tooth structure itself is already lessened, and forces overtime generates a wedging effect on the tooth, which may split it apart. Thus I would strongly advise you to avoid eating hard food as much as possible even after you have had your root canal treatment, as this would help to protect your tooth in the long run.

Should I remove the canine or premolar for braces?

I certainly agree with Dr Singh’s comments. It sounds like your canine is of poor quality as one dentist advised you to keep the healthy premolars? Extraction treatment plans should answer these questions: 1) does the facial and lip profile need to be softened by changing the lip support via extractions? Would taking out teeth cause excessive space to undermine lip support that is currently good, causing an ageing look? 2) Are there alternative ways to create space other than extraction of teeth? Can this be safely achieved? Will it take forever?
