What are the treatment options available to reduce dandruff and constant itchiness?

Doctor's Answers 1

For the management of dandruff and scalp itching, it is always best and recommended to visit a Dermatologist for an assessment of your scalp. As scaling and itching of the scalp may be due to different conditions such as:

  • seborrheic dermatitis,
  • fungal infections or
  • psoriasis - a long-lasting autoimmune disease where there are patches of abnormal skin.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment of the specific condition can then be advised. For seborrheic dermatitis, which is the most commonly seen condition, gentle antifungal shampoo and a mild steroid lotion normally gives excellent relief of your symptoms.

Be sure to seek help early from your doctor.

What could be the cause of an itchy rash at my tattoo? (photo)

Hello Geraldine, Thank you for your question. If you are talking about an itchy rash over the tattoo, it may be a hypersensitivity reaction to the pigment of the tattoo. In some cases, it can be aggravated by exposure to sunlight. However you should still see a doctor for a thorough examination to determine the cause of the rash. You can consider increasing the strength of the steroid cream you are using (mild to moderate etc) and increasing the number of times you apply your moisturiser per day (from 2 times to 4 times etc). You can also take antihistamines to help with the rash and itch.

Why do I get extremely itchy in hot weather? (photo)

Hi Che Ee, From your picture and description, it seems like heat rash to me. Singapore is a tropical and humid country, which may cause you to perspire excessively. The blisters are caused by sweat droplets trapped under the skin. Sweat is an irritant which results in itch and pain. Heat rash typically subsides in a few days and gets better during colder weather. In TCM, heat rash, also known as 热痱 (re4 fei4) is caused by the combination of humidity (dampness) and summer heat (hot weather).
