What could be the cause of recurring swollen lymph nodes at the groin?

Doctor's Answers 1

Lymph node swelling can be caused by infections, cancers and inflammatory diseases.

By far the most common cause is infection. Infection from the surrounding areas that drain into the lymph nodes such as the legs, abdomen, groin area can lead to the swelling of the lymph node. If there is recurrent swelling, these areas should be examined to exclude a persistent source of infection.

Often a course of antibiotics may be given to see if the lymph node swelling settles.

If the lymph node is persistent, you should see your doctor to get this assessed. Less commonly, but not be missed, are cancers like lymphoma which often present with lymph node swelling. Your doctor can advise you further on the need for further investigations or treatment.

What should I do for an itchy fungal infection at my groin that is not getting better?

Thank you for your question. Common causes of rashes on the groin include fungal infection, eczema and intertrigo. It is important to make the correct diagnosis as the treatment for fungal infection and eczema is very different. As your rash has been very persistent, you can consider seeing your dermatologist/doctor to confirm the diagnosis. A fungal scraping can be performed to confirm or rule out the diagnosis of fungal infection if there is any doubt.

What could this red rash and itchiness in my groin be? (photo)

Your rash appears to be allergic or heat rash. However more history and examination will be helpful. If the rash gets worse or fails to resolve after a few days, please seek help from a doctor.
