AST (SGOT) is one of the serum enzymes commonly classified under the liver panel. It is, however, not specific enough to suggest there is any problem with your liver since AST is also produced by the heart, brain, kidney and red blood cells.

In general, a mild elevation may be transient in nature which usually carries no clinical significance. In such a case, the repeat test a few weeks downstream should show a value within the normal range. Should the AST level is persistently high or significantly elevated, you should consider doing further tests to exclude any liver disease and other medical conditions.

If you are currently taking any health supplement, try stopping it before the repeat test. At times, medicine or health supplement may cause a mild elevation in the AST level.

When are elevated liver enzymes a cause for concern?

Isolated elevation in ALP level, especially if marginal and transient in nature without any elevation in the other liver enzymes and serum bilirubin level usually does not signify a serious medical problem. Some teenagers and young adults may have marginally elevated ALP levels due to more active bone metabolism. This is considered a normal variant. Drugs and fatty liver can also cause ALP elevation without a concurrently higher GGT level.
