What to avoid after facial laser treatment?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

Generally, after facial laser treatment, the skin may be a little sensitive and prone to developing pigmentation.

Hence, after facial laser treatment, avoid harsh soaps and facial creams that may worsen the sensitivity. Such creams include alpha hydroxy acids and tretinoin. These creams may be used judiciously several weeks later after the skin normalizes. A gentle moisturizer used regularly will help the lasered skin recover faster.

It is important to avoid UV exposure after facial laser treatment to minimize post-laser hyperpigmentation. A broad spectrum sunscreen and other sun protection methods are a must during the immediate post-laser period.

Smoking should be avoided as it delays wound healing and will undo the anti-aging benefits of the laser treatment.

A common concern raised by my patients is what food to avoid. Actually, there is no food that may cause any issues post-laser, so it is permissible to consume all food in moderation.

Hope this helps!

Why have chemical peels not been effective for my hyperpigmentation?

Sorry to hear you are struggling with troublesome post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which often appears as brown marks on the skin after an initial injury/pimple/inflammation on the skin. It is very common in Asians due to the higher melanin content in our skin. which gets released after any inflammation to the area. How long it takes to fade can depend on what caused it in the first place, and the location of the pigmentation. The face will often fade faster than the body, which will fade faster than your legs. Is laser treatment effective for prolonged redness and PIH due to surgical scars?

Hello Always Thank you for your question. Laser is a good method of treating prolonged redness and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from surgical scars. The redness and erythema can treated with a pulsed dye laser while the PIH can be treated with gentle laser toning. Laser treatment can be combined with topical agents such as triluma/ hydroquinone/ retinoid for the best result. Speak to a dermatologist/ aesthetic physician/ plastic surgeon to find out more. Hope this helps!
