If you notice that your mole has increased in size, changed its shape or color, started bleeding or became itchy, or has started “sprouting” new moles around it, I would recommend that you consult a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who would be able to advise if any further investigations are required.

Some options that may be proposed include a biopsy of the mole to confirm the nature of the mole (whether it is benign, pre-cancerous or cancerous).

A simple rule about moles is the ABCDE rule:

A: Asymmetry

B: Borders (irregular)

C: Color (more than one, change in color, irregular)

D: Diameter >6mm

E: Evolving (size, shape, color, symptoms)

If your mole has any of the above, please see a specialist as it might be a sign of melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.

Hope this helps!

It may be helpful to take a photograph of the mole, and measure its size.

Dermatologists are the most experienced when it comes to telling a worrying mole apart from a non-worrying one.

Hello AZ Thank you for your question. You should definitely consult a doctor first to get an accurate diagnosis. There are many different types of moles and it is important to make sure the mole is a benign and harmless one before deciding on removal.

How can I treat a long-standing inflamed bump on my forehead?

I’m sorry to hear that you are suffering from this for the last 2 years. From the pictures, it does not seem to by a typical acne cyst. It may not even have been a pimple right from the start. I would suggest quickly seeing a dermatologist for your condition. There are various ways of removing this lesion which has good cosmetic outcomes. If necessary, he/she may also suggest sending the lesion for further testing depending on your consult. Hope this helps!
