How can I get rid of a tummy bulge that won't go away despite exercise and dieting?

Body contouring has 2 options: 1) Invasive, which uses Liposuction either by Needle method or Laser-assisted. These are currently the most popular and effective, but the downtime such as swelling and bruising can be an issue. They can last up to 6-10 weeks. 2) Non-invasive. These include HIFU (Liposonix being a popular brand), Radiofrequency, Fat-freeze or Cryolipolysis. These have minimal downtime and when used appropriately and in combination, the results can be quite satisfactory.

How long does one need to take multivitamins and folic acid for when pregnant?

Folic acid should generally be taken prior to conception and in the first trimester in particular as the neural tube is still forming. Folic acid is important for prevention of neural tube defects. It is also important in women with diabetes and on antiepileptic medication to prevent neural tube defects. There is some conflicting evidence in the possible role of folic acid in reducing the risk of autism.

Do oral sunblock supplements like Heliocare give the same UV protection as topical sunblock?

Hi Denise Wonderful question. There are many reasons for people not wanting to use topical sunblock. For example, they may find it too greasy, or that it clogs up their skin. Oral sunscreen supplements utilising P Leucotomos is getting increasingly popular, especially in those who get generalised body exposure to UV rays (sun bathing etc). At a dosage of 7. 5mg/kg, oral sunscreen supplements have been shown to reduce the risk of erythema and sunburns.

Does Vitamin D promote weight loss by boosting metabolism?

Obese adults (BMI over 30 kg/m2 ) are at high risk for vitamin D deficiency because vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and the the body fat sequesters it, hence they require higher doses of Vitamin D than their non-obese counterparts. However, there is no good evidence that replacing Vitamin D will boost weight loss. The main non-calcium related benefit of vitamin D is fall prevention. If you are deficient in Vitamin D (blood test show a low Vitamin D level), then treatment is indicated.

Which doctor can I see for low carb and high fat diet in Singapore?

Your best bet would be to seek out a Sport Medicine doctor in Singapore, who are able to advice you on nutrition, weight loss and exercise, as well as to link you up with a dietitian if necessary. Even though I’m partial towards low carbs/high protein myself, I can’t advocate a diet that’s high in fat (nor would most other doctors) due to the associated heart disease risks. It’s important to seek out a doctor regarding your new heart palpitations to determine the cause, as an ECG is an simple test that can help your doctor screen for and rule out insidious conditions.

Are there any lifestyle or diet choices that can help to shrink fibroids?

Hi! Despite what we may read online regarding foods which may promote or reduce fibroid growth, in reality, diet makes little difference in changing the size of fibroids. Fibroid growth may vary significantly among different women and some women may be a lot more prone to fibroids than others, usually due to a combination of genetics and inherent factors in the fibroid itself. The vast majority of fibroids are benign, but infrequently, a fast growing “fibroid” may turn out to be malignant or cancerous.

Can a low carb diet improve glucose levels for Type 1 Diabetics?

Your question is certainly an interesting one. As Dr Marilyn mentions, insulin injections are important in type 1 DM as you are deficient in insulin. Your glucose control needs to be achieved through a balance between insulin doses and food intake. Of course it is mindful to note the different types of foods and the types of carbohydrates contained. On this point, in addition to seeing an endocrine physician, it might be worth consulting a dietician. One area of interest is diabetes and exercise. Often, there can be significant variations in blood glucose depending on the 1.

Is a low carb diet effective for losing weight? Can it cause liver and kidney problems?

Thanks for the question. Certainly diet plays a significant role in weight management or reduction. Essentially, it’s a matter of balance. If you put more calories in than you expend, you will be in a positive balance and hence this is stored by the body for a rainy day. In the past, when your ancestors had a less predictable supply of food, it meant that over the good times, they stored fat and in harder times, our body used these fat stores. Interestingly, ketones are a byproduct of fat breakdown and also a metabolite for the brain.

Does diet and facial masks affect skin complexion?

Yes it’s true that there have NEVER been any proven studies linking diet as a factor in causing acne. Even the studies on diary was equivocal. Having said that, I tell my own patients to stay away from certain types of foods if they think it’s triggering acne. Moreover, I’m pretty sure unhealthy diets can’t be good for the skin in general! Conversely, if you eat well, sleep well, exercise and keep fit, not just your skin, but all your other body organs benefit. So yes, I’d say a healthy diet would have benefits on your complexion.

What should I do if I am unable to gain weight despite a good diet and exercise?

Thank you for your question. You mentioned having a low BMI ever since you were a child. It would be useful taking a look at your height and weight charts to see if you have been on the same centiles or crossing centiles. For example, if you are on the 10th centile and have always been on this centile over the years, it's less concerning than if you were on the 25th centile and now on the 10th centile. Causes of poor weight gain are multiple, and can be explained by an imbalance in calorie intake vs calorie expenditure.

Why do I get indigestion after eating certain foods, and what should I do next?

Try to take smaller portions each time you eat for a period of time and see if there is any improvement. Fluids and exercise may help. Consider losing some weight if you are on the larger side. The best way to achieve this is to combine regular exercises with restricting your daily Calorie intake. And do ensure you open your bowel regularly since constipation may worsen your symptoms. Lastly, watch for alarm features such as vomiting, unexplained weight loss, passing black stools or having your urine colour deepening to almost tea colour. You will need professional help for the above.
