The majority of dental treatments are carried out to prevent or treat the two most common oral diseases which are dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal disease (gum disease). Common treatments involve the restoration of teeth, extraction or surgical removal of teeth, scaling and root planing and endodontic root canal treatment.

Common dental treatments

By nature of their general training, GP dentists in Singapore can can carry out the majority of dental treatments.

Examples include:

  • Restorative dental treatment
  • Dentures
  • Root canal treatment
  • Gum therapy
  • Extraction of teeth

Dentists can also prescribe medications such as antiobiotics, and any other drugs used in patient management.

How long do dental procedures take?

  • Standard dental check-ups and cleanings can take from 30 minutes to an hour. The time taken depends on the dentist's skill and speed.
  • Teeth whitening can take an hour but it is necessary to bleach your teeth at home for about 2-4 weeks after the treatment.

  • Treatment for root canals take about 90 minutes. Multiple root canals may require repeated visits and more time.
  • Dental crowns are slighly more complicated. The treatment requires 2 visits to the dentist, spaced 2 weeks apart. Each appointment takes about 20 minutes, the former to create the impression for the dental crowns and the latter to insert the finished crown.

  • Dental bridge treatments follow a similar pattern to that of dental crowns.

Best Toothbrush + Toothpaste to use

The main thing about toothbrushes is that it is not about what you use but rather how you use it. If the brush can reach the furthest back tooth and the gums, it is a good toothbrush. Do change your toothbrush regularly (every 2 months) to ensure the brush is of high quality.

As you have said, Zenyum is a very new clear aligner company. There is very little background information on the official website regarding the technology used for their treatment planning and aligner manufacturing. Zenyum appears to be a collaboration between local orthodontists ...

Extraction of premolars generally gives the most amount of space for correction of crowding. Whether this is needed will depend on how much space is needed . Space is required for straightening the teeth, leveling the bite, midline correction and to reduce protrusion of the incis...

Hi there and thank you for your question. Invisalign is an orthodontic appliance that works by contacting the surfaces of your teeth to nudge them to the next position. Invisalign is customised and designed to be as close-fitting as possible to your tooth surface to effect to...

First of all, let me share with you that all General Dental Surgeons as well as Specialist Dental Surgeons, regardless of their area of specialty , are legally allowed to perform wisdom tooth removal. However, having said that, not all dental surgeons have equal training and ex...

Usually wisdom teeth are not aligned during Invisalign unless the teeth are fully erupted an in function (you are using it to chew). I do not routinely ask my patients to remove their wisdom teeth prior to Invisalign as we do not usually require the space that the wisdom teeth ...

You may find that if your teeth have not relapsed too badly and you only need some minor adjustments, there is an Invisalign lite option. This option is for milder cases and therefore it will require less time and will cost less too. Do consult your orthodontist for an assessment ...

I am sorry that you are suffering from malocclusion. Unfortunately, insurance rarely covers orthodontic treatment as it is usually considered as an elective procedure. Cases that are deemed medically necessary include: cleft lip, difficulty in eating due to malocclusion such a...

Thank you for your question. I have never heard of braces treatment causing teeth to crack. It is important to note that before braces treatment begins, your dentist should check that your teeth and gums are healthy, free of decay and damage, free of any pre-existing cracks and...

This is a very valid question and also an age old one! Though it may sound like a cop out, I am going to say all the dentists you have consulted prior to this have not been wrong. Be it whether it was advice to remove or to leave it status quo. Without the benefit of radiograp...

Thank you for your question. I suppose the dentist who is attending to your child recommended the extractions based on the fact that the breakdown on the teeth is severe (as you have also described), which may cause more problems for your child in the long run. They probably...
