Can tooth abscesses be linked to difficulty breathing?

First and foremost, I would strongly advise you to seek immediate medical/ dental attention in view of your chest tightness and breathlessness. That, on it's own warrants some urgent attention in my opinion. There are many other possible causes of those symptoms besides the dental abscess that you described. In severe dental abscesses, the infection can sometimes track down to the neck and chest areas which we sometimes refer to as cellulitis. In very severe cases, it can lead to a condition called Ludwig's Angina.

What should I do next for a wisdom tooth infection that is still causing pain?

It definitely seems to me there is some underlying cause for your recurrent infections. Typically, it is due to the way your wisdom tooth is positioned. Antibiotics do indeed help to clear the acute infection symptoms most of the times. In fact, some of my patients who originally scheduled for the wisdom tooth removal will call back to cancel the procedure as the pain has gone away after the course of antibiotics! Haha.

Does root planing reduce inflammation and excess gum growth?

Dr Toh has actually provided a very good and detailed answer to your queries which I am sure will be very helpful to you. I will just add on a little to that. Sometimes at my practice, I do come across patients with similar conditions to yours. However, there is a need to approach every case differently, depending on the severity and the main causative factors. Some of my patients recover very well with just a thorough scaling and good hygiene habits, whilst others went on to require specialist gum treatment (ie root planing, surgery etc).

Is it rude to request for a specific dentist every time if I have a dental phobia?

Hi, Haha, lets put it this way. When I go for my haircut, I will sometimes request for a specific barber or stylist. I definitely don't think I'm being rude by asking for that. =) It's just a personal preference. and it makes for better conversations too as it's like catching up with an old friend every now and then. Similarly, I definitely do not think it is considered rude for you to request for a specific dentist to treat you. In fact, at my practise we also have several different dentists working on specific days.
