Can fillers keep my lips moist and reduce the side effects of Isotretinoin?

They certainly can. Lip fillers are hyaluronic acid based products added to the lips to add volume and hydration. Hyaluronic acid draws in moisture and can hold many times its molecular weight in water. I normally suggest lip balm and lip ointments for patients who have dry lips from isotretinoin, but skin booster like treatments for the lips can help add hydration as well. If you have thin lips and would like to add some volume or shape to your dry lips, then going with a lip filler would be a great 2-in-1 solution for your problem! Hope this helps!

Do nose thread lifts help with opening up the medial epicanthic fold?

A nose bridge threadlift will offer a mild improvement if you have prominent medial epicanthic folds. This is because the threads inserted adds volume to the nose bridge area and stretches the skin, resulting in a medial pull of the medial epicanthic folds. That being said, the effect is temporary, as are nose threads, lasting for 1-2 years, and is normally quite limited. Unless your nose bridge is your primary aesthetic concern, it might be in your interest to consider a medial epicanthoplasty. Hope this helps!

I had a nose bridge and tip thread lift. It is bothering me that i can feel a thread in my upper middle gingival area. My doctor said it will be dissolved in few months, but the area where the thread is protruding is getting uncomfortable. What are the next possible steps I could take?

What you are experiencing is an abutting of your nose threads on the oral mucosa, which can happen as a complication of nose-tip threads. It is true that the threads will be dissolved by your skin in time, but it can cause a great deal of discomfort in the few months before it does. There is also the possiblity of thread extrusion if there is alot of pressure of the thread on the mucosa. If the threads are causing you alot of discomfort, I suggest removing the thread via a small puncture hole through the oral mucosa.

How to remove broken capillaries and visible small blood vessels on my face?

Hi Amber! Broken capillaries appear on our face because our skin thins out due to aging and sun damage. The amount of collagen and elastin in the dermis decreases and blood vessels expand, looking more obvious. They can be quite annoying if they get really obvious around the lower face (nose, cheeks, lips), and covering them with makeup is difficult. At my practice we use IPL and long pulsed 1064nm/755nm wavelength laser to treat your problem. The intensity and wavelength selected would depend of the colour of your skin and the diameter of the capillary.

How to fix under eye and tear trough hollowing?

Hi Joo! A tear trough deformity can cast a shadow on the lower lid, giving the appearance of a dark eye circles and making a person look tired. If there is hollowing of the under-eyes, it is likely that you lack volume in the cheeks as well. I would recommend tear trough and cheek fillers for a good overall result. A soft filler would be place in the tear trough area, and a harder filler would be placed in the cheeks. Good technique is required to prevent complications such as lumpiness and Tyndall effect (bluish discoloration due to too large or too superficial filler placement).

How is fungal acne diagnosed, and what tests are performed for fungal acne?

Hi Natalie! ''Fungal acne'', also known as pityrosporum folliculitis or malassezia folliculitis is the infection of hair follicles and sebaceous glands by fungi, characterised multiple tiny acne bumps around the typically sweaty areas like the hairline, chest, and upper back. It can be clinically diagnosed with a good history and physical examination, but a definitive test would be a fungal scraping (whereby some dead skin cells are scraped off the affected area and looked under the microscope) showing fungal spores or hyphae.

How effective are lasers for permanently getting rid of moles?

Hi Mitch! Lasers are great for removing superficial moles that do not go deep into the skin. With junctional naevi, the chance of recurrence is low as long as the mole is completely removed with good technique. If the mole is too deep (compound or dermal naevi), your doctor will likely advise you to excise it as a permanent solution. Laser removal would leave behind some tissue and the risk of recurrence would be higher. That said, please have your moles looked at by a licensed doctor to make sure they are not suspicious before having them removed by a laser!

Can Botox of the Masseter muscle result in bone loss, and should I be concerned?

Hi Michelle! The massetor acts on ur jawbone and helps chewing. Like all the bones in your body, a lack of muscular action on them would cause a decrease in bone density, that’s why exercise is recommended to increase bone density and prevent osteoporosis in the elderly. Botox of the massetor reduces the action of chewing, and thus may cause some bone resorption. However the effect is minimal and has not caused any complications to patients in my practice or in the literature. Hope that helps!

How can I prevent or minimise scarring after an insect bite?

I agree with Dr Theng's answer to your question. Do not pick your insect bites no matter how itchy t especially if its on your face and you want to prevent scarring. Topical antibiotics (e. g. Fusidic Acid) help to prevent an infection, that might aggravate the bite and worsen scarring. Topical steroids (e. g. Hydrocortisone) will help reduce inflammation if there is an exaggerated immune response causing causes excessive inflammation. To add on, keeping the area well hydrated with moisturisers during the recovery period will help reduce scarring.

How can I prevent persistent closed comedones that keep recurring?

Sounds like you've done quite a bit of research, taken some necessary precautions, and yet you are still bothered by this problem. You are right to use medical grade, non-comedogenic products. Retinoids, chemical peels (e. g. AHAs, salicylic acid) and exfoliation in general should help reduce hypercornification of the pilosebaceous duct unit, which prevent buildup of sebum and cause comedones. Painful extractions work, but like you said, are quite expensive to do regularly. A good skincare routine would be essential for prevention of comedones.

What are good recommended sunscreens in Singapore for UVA and UVB protection?

Hi Elaine! You should look out for products with SPF 50 and PA +++. The SPF is a relative measure of sun protection that the sunscreen provides against UVB. For example, if you normally take 20 minutes under direct sunlight to burn, SPF 50 sunblock will multiply that time by 50 for you to 1000 minutes. The number of +'s behind the PA rating determines the amount of protection against UVA. UVA protection is important to prevent pigmentation and photo-aging of the skin. There are some additional considerations you may want to make before choosing your ideal sunscreen.
