Will a night time mouth guard help with daytime jaw pain?

Thank you for your question. It sounds like you may be grinding your teeth at night. The short answer to your question is yes, it will very likely help with the pain. Know also that you are not alone, more and more people seem to be coming in to our clinic with similar issues! Have you worn any form of mouth guard before? If not, it might be a good idea to consult your regular dentist on possibly having one made. Further consult with your dentist on the possible causes of your teeth grinding will also be necessary. Hope this answers your question!

Am I suitable for teeth whitening if I have sensitive teeth?

Thank you for your question. Well it really depends on the source and nature of your tooth sensitivity as the approach may be very different for different circumstances. We would not be able to say for certain without some form of prior clinical examination by your dentist. In general, my patients do find that take-home whitening tends to cause less sensitivity but again, this really depends on what the source of your sensitivity is in the first place. After whitening, we would expect teeth to stay white for at least a year or more on average before some touch-up may be needed.

Does enamel microabrasion help to remove fluorosis stains?

Hi there and thank you for your question. As the link you have provided suggests, microabrasion definitely does have a place in the management of tooth discolouration. We sometimes use it in isolation and at other times in conjunction with other means of correcting tooth colour. Do bear in mind though that not every case will respond well to microabrasion and some discolouration may be too deep seated to be corrected by microabrasion alone. A prior clinical assessment to determine suitability is of course necessary.

How do I know if my wisdom tooth needs to be extracted?

This is a very valid question and also an age old one! Though it may sound like a cop out, I am going to say all the dentists you have consulted prior to this have not been wrong. Be it whether it was advice to remove or to leave it status quo. Without the benefit of radiographs and a clinical examination of your teeth, I am however hesitant to weigh in with my own opinion. The need to remove wisdom teeth can at times be discretional and not so clear cut. At times it is a definite must while at other times, surgical risk of removal may outweigh the benefits.

Which procedures do I need at routine dental checkups?

Thank you for your question. Firstly, it is wonderful that you are asking about routine dental check ups because most people do not even know that it is advisable to have one done every 6 months! As for procedures, a mandatory clinical examination should be able to highlight what your treatment needs are. Often, x-rays may also be necessary to check on areas that are not readily visible to the naked eye such as between back teeth or under old fillings. Very often, scaling and polishing is also done during the 6 monthly check up.

Is there a chance of tooth decay if my tooth filling was placed before my tooth was dry?

thanks for your question. Perhaps your dentist may have done some gentle air drying using the triple function syringe attached to the chair? The same instrument sprays both water and air so both might have been done within a short period of time? Or perhaps your dentist dried it through use of cotton pellets and cotton rolls? In my clinical practice, I do indeed find that the best results from fillings are often yielded after adequate moisture control is achieved.

How will I know if my dental crown is too thin to withstand biting stress?

thank you for your question. For full metal crowns, the minimum thickness required for longevity of the crown is in fact very fine and can be circa 1mm with no issues and/or impact to the underlying tooth. Without fully understanding what kind of crown was issued and the design of the crown, I am however unable to advise you on what this said inner layer may be made of or whether the remaining thickness is sufficient. If the crown is properly designed and truly intact, there is often nothing to fear even if the deeper metal layer is exposed.
