My face currently does not have acne (occasional breakouts) but I am heavily reliant on benzoyl peroxide and have to apply it every night. Will any dermatologist prescribe me a low dose of Accutane for my condition?

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for the question.

Accutane or isotretinoin is an effective treatment for acne and is a good treatment for the control and maintenance of acne. It is also a good treatment for oil control.

When to Prescribe Low Dosage of Accutane

A low dosage of Accutane or isotretinoin can be prescribed for individuals with recurrent acne.

Side Effects of Accutane

However, Accutane does have a number of side effects. This includes:

  • skin and lip dryness
  • teratogenicity
  • photosensitivity, etc.

Your dermatologist will need to see you to assess your medical history and acne condition. He will discuss the risks and benefits of Accutane for you to decide if low dose Accutane can be prescribed for you.
