Can benzoyl peroxide help with PIE (post inflammatory erythema)?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

Benzoyl peroxide acts by killing the bacteria causing inflammatory acne.

Indirectly, by controlling acne inflammation well, PIE may be reduced.

Benzoyl peroxide has no direct effect in reducing PIE. Occasionally, due to the mild skin irritation experienced by some patients from benzoyl peroxide, PIE may appear a little worse instead. Nevertheless, benzoyl peroxide is a key component of topical acne treatment and should be used in non-sensitive patients.

Hope this helps!
