Can a small to medium (2-3 cm in size) congenital melanocytic nevi be treated in babies or should they be older first?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

Small to medium-sized congenital moles have relatively low risk of turning malignant and should probably be left alone and observed.

Complete removal requires surgical excision. Some pigment lasers may result in partial lightening if surgery is declined as an option.

Surgical removal requires adequate anaesthesia and, in babies, general anaesthesia may be required. While safe, general anaesthesia runs a small risk of affecting the neuro-development of the baby, which may not be acceptable to the parents.

It is therefore safer to consider treatment when the child is older and more co-operative so that the procedure may be performed under local anaesthesia rather than general anaesthesia.
