What could be going on with my mother who has difficulty forming words, is losing interest in doing things, and having trouble remembering a few days before?

Doctor's Answer

There are several possible conditions that come to my mind.

  1. First, depression. Many patients with depression also have poor concentration and memory. They have poor sleep, decreased appetite, and may have suicidal thoughts or attempts.
  2. Second, that of dementia. This is a disorder of the brain that affects memory, orientation, ability to find one's way, and various functions of the brain.
  3. Third, medical conditions like Vit B12 deficiency and underactive thyroid gland.

Do arrange for your mother to seek treatment from a family physician or a psychiatrist soon. The doctor will ask questions about forgetfulness and orientation. Inquiries would be made regarding activities of daily living, including instrumental activities such as everyday problem solving and handling of business and financial affairs. Independent functioning in community affairs, such as job responsibilities, shopping, and participation in social groups, would be assessed.

In the early stages of dementia, the patient may show restricted interest in hobbies and other activities and may require prompting to maintain personal hygiene. Frequent use of vague terms like "that thing" and “it” may also signify deterioration of language function.

Alzheimer vs Depression

Some of the symptoms common to both Alzheimer's and depression include:

  • loss of interest in activities and hobbies
  • social withdrawal
  • memory problems
  • sleeping too much or too little
  • impaired concentration.

With so much overlap in symptoms, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two disorders, especially since they often occur together. Oftentimes a thorough physical exam and psychological evaluation can be helpful in making a diagnosis.
