How do essential oils benefit children with autism?

Doctor's Answer

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition characterised by core deficits in three areas of development: language, social interaction and behaviour (stereotypies and/or restricted and unusual patterns of interests). Evidence suggests a high prevalence of psychiatric conditions in ASD. These include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), disruptive behavioural disorders, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and mood disorders. Other associated problems include low IQ, epilepsy, sleep disturbance, self-harm, irritability and aggression towards others.

At the outset, it is important to note that essential oils are not well regulated and true research and clinical testing in children has not happened yet. Although it is not a treatment or cure for ASD or ADHD, some of the symptoms and typical struggles can be improved. With these disorders, soft skills can be difficult to measure. They include:

  • Falling and staying asleep
  • Tolerating periods of transition
  • Remaining focused and attentive to learn
  • Staying calm to socialize and play

A relevant study published in 2001 by Dr. Terry Freidman involved children diagnosed with ADHD who were given essential oils to treat their symptoms. Vetiver, cedarwood, and lavender oils were used separately in 18 children 3 times per day over a one month period to improve attention and focus. The essential oil with the most promising outcomes was vetiver oil, as measured by studies on the brain waves [1].
