Do I need to be worried about an incidental heart murmur?

Doctor's Answer

I agree entirely with Dr Ng . You have no cause to worry if the murmur was merely incidental and you are:

  • Otherwise active and fit
  • Have no family history of sudden collapses or deaths
  • Have no symptoms whatsoever

Occasionally murmurs could be secondary to something entirely unrelated, as in anemia, but usually you tend to have other symptoms as well i.e from the anemia.

You may want to touch base with your GP to ensure all is well apart from your heart. A normal ECG and echocardiogram is pretty reassuring from a heart point of view.
