Have there been cases of blindness for people who underwent cataract surgery?

Doctor's Answer

There have been such cases and the most serious complication is an infection for any surgery in the eye. Once there is an infection, there is a risk for blindness.

Frankly, it is very rare and I think if you see your eye doctor, he should be talking to you about the risk of that as well. The doctors should take all these procedures to reduce the risk, such as cleaning and making sure the wound is watertight after the surgery.
