How can I give birth naturally if I am overweight?

Doctor's Answer

In general, there are a few considerations that we will look at for natural birth in overweight mothers:

1. Stage of your pregnancy

2. Size of your baby

3. Position of your baby

4. Presence of existing medical conditions or complications such as diabetes, position of your placenta etc.

Of course, if you are in the pre-pregnancy stage and planning for a child with the goal of delivering naturally, then it is highly advisable to kick-start a weight loss programme.

If you currently have pre-existing conditions, work with your gynaecologist to see how you can best prepare your body for a health pregnancy. There are pre-conception screening services available for couples to identify any underlying medical conditions and health status as they plan for pregnancy.

Do note that ultimately, the answer to this question depends on many factors as more information is required before an accurate answer specific to your condition can be given.

I would advise you to discuss with your obstetrician/gynae who is caring for your pregnancy.

Hope this helps!
