Frequent abdominal pain at this young age which is time specific (i.e. occurring before bed time or in the morning) may be related to external factors such as reluctance to cut play time before bed or to go to school.

Such feelings may be easier to express as symptoms rather than emotions for a child. At times, certain food may cause excessive gas formation and cramps although this pain is more likely to be related to meals.

Having said that, it will be important for you to observe for other clues such as her weight status, eating and bowel habits and whether the discomfort bothers her during play time. Do look out for fever, vomiting and loose stools which may point towards an organic cause for the problem.

If in doubt, do consult your GP or a paediatrician so that your child can get a proper evaluation.
